Geeez, I recommended Stan (Doorman)? That must have been a long time ago, BEFORE he flew my Hirobo tandem! (You had to be there, I still have nightmares) - Sorry Stan .

Anyway, you want about 1120 rotor rpm with the Vario 4800 Chinook. With the stock gearing this means 12S and a 240kv motor. I use the recommended Pyro 850-24. This motor is bit overkill power wise, but the rpm is great. I run 2 x 6S 5000mAh or 6000mAh packs. The batteries need to fit into the battery box, so I do not see getting much bigger than 6000's in there. I get 8+ minutes of flying with no issues with the 5000's.

I of course use the BD 3SX, and I use a Castle Creations BEC Pro at 6v and a Castle Edge 160HVf ESC. Not much air circulation inside this CH-47 body.
This stuff is actually a snug fit in the mechanics and still be able to get the body on and off easily.

Any full size high quality servo will work fine for the heads. Do not forget this this system uses (only) 4 servos total, 2 for the front head and 2 for the rear head. I am using Futaba BLS-272SV servos.

Please use the stock Vario fiberglass blades with this model. The head and blades work as a system to provide the outstanding flight characteristics. You need a set of 3 left hand and a set of 3 right hand rotation. The stock blades are semi-symmetrical.

The special head style with very soft dampening and the somewhat flexible blades are very important.

I never tried to lift anything with mine, but it seems to have very ample power. Dan on the west coast scaled his up quite a bit (lots of extra weight), and it flies, but probably not as well as mine does in stock form.

I thought you might have taken up drinking!!!#
I remember that day ... certainly was "interesting", but finished well!!

If you follow these recommendations, you will have an amazing flying machine ..,,

Of course Stan and I are just kidding (Well it was an "interesting" flight, and it did end OK...), and Stan is welcome to fly any of my helis anytime.

The point is that one person can think that their scale helicopter flies just "perfect", and someone else can try it and find it almost "uncontrollable". We all have our preference of just what a scale heli should "feel" like, and we set it up accordingly.

What I can say is that the Vario Chinook is very stable in all four axis including elevator (pitch), which is the difficult axis to control in a tandem heli. It is also very stable / controllable in wind gusts, which the stock Hirobo tandems were not. Basically the stock Vario Chinook with the 3SX can and does fly like a pod and boom sport helicopter, which is quite a feat of engineering.

It can also fly without the Chinook body in place (just mechanics), so it has a low "pucker factor" for those first few flights.

Just my 2 cents worth....

Sandy
