I recently was thinking if direct drive brushless main rotor system can be success on 700/800 size helicopter? And yes for custom made ship!

There's lots of low rpm, high efficient multirotor brushless motor options out there. I was especially thinking of T-motor P80 which could be a great option, I guess?

Do you think that there would be any benefits to try this in terms of battery consumption, clean and simple frame design, perhaps more vibration free?

As you all know it is possible but not that convenient to achive longer flight times on the ap helicopters unlike multirotors however My main point is to understand if we could?

Greetings,

The lowest I see is 100kv. You'd have to run it on probably 5s ( maybe 6s ) to keep the HS under 2,000rpms.
There were no power ratings on the site I viewed it on... so don't know if it can handle the amperage required to fly a 700-800 size heli carrying a payload of camera equipment.

I don't think it's possible . Only ever seen a micro goblin do it . The headspeed was high and it was small.

Only one sure way to find out. built it!

Interesting project!

I would consider AUW and flight time goal the determining factors.

Motor specs:
34 pound thrust (30×10 pitch prop and 12S batt)
3300 watts
AUW 100 pounds

They claim a Quad with AUW of 55 pounds and 22,000mAh run time is between 10-20min while a Hexa with AUW of 66 pounds and 44,000mAh run time is between 30-40min

Link where I found specs

With asymmetric blades and around 1500rpm you are looking at 5S LiPo and at least 30,000mA which is at least 4 to 6 batts in parallel.

Surely a DJI phantom 4 has got to have its merits with 20min plus flying times. Why is this not an option?
