It’s quite incredible considering the carry on about this site potentially closing that it is now so quiet again.

Where has everyone gone?

I’m hoping like me that everyone still checks the forum at least once a day?

I'm afraid this has been the new normal for quite a while. I would like to see Mark reduce the number of forums. There just isn't enough activity to support them all.

Why? You cant just have one giant main forum posting questions and topics about anything and everything. That would be a disaster and impossible to find anything without searching every time. If there is a forum that interests you click it, if not simply look over it. There are plenty of us who will look at any new topic to see if we can help, no matter where its posted.

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

I try to check in once a day but sometimes it's a few between. I contribute far less than I used to as I'm simply less active in the hobby at this point. Life has become very complicated and busy. I like to comment where I can but often I find myself just reading to catch up on what I've missed. There have been times I would have liked to comment but I don't feel as confident as I once did.

I would hate to see Mark's stats on my IP addresses. I check at least 10 times a day. Some days more, some days even more!

You know I have recently noticed something about myself when it comes to this hobby. I have almost no interest in new models or brands. I have a really strong interest in existing and particularly older designs, not really old more 2000-2010, the most exiting era for me.

I know what it means for the future...

Where?
This seems to have become a hobby about assemble then fly and not so much build and fly. You now follow the instructions and go fly a machine you assemble or fly straight out of the box. Most will do almost anything you want.. There's no need for chat or discussions or questions how to improve the hardware.. l'm thinking the same thing happened at a club level. The content of the discussions changed and attendance slowly went down hill. . Model Heli's as they were have come and had their day. Old timers (like me) keep the community alive as they do in Auto and Motor Cycle clubs. New toys appear and the young blood migrates too them..

I really cant see why we can’t have some more manufacturer support and a greater following of more conventional helicopters such as flybar and glow/gas.

I really don’t buy into the new low parts count, ultra electronic helicopters. They are dead boring, plain and simple. How many people are actually 3d pro flyers. If I wanted low parts count, plug and play I’d buy a drone or even a sim. As for anything below 550 size I’m just not sure they are part of the same hobby, toys, perhaps? (ok big call but I’m sure some will understand what I’m saying).

I miss the good old days

Did FBL kill the hobby ?.

Since fbl came out it put everybody on the same level for flight performance. Because of the electronic box almost all can be made to feel the same. Where as before there was more emphasis on the mechanical head.
there was more tuning involved and experimenting. Now you change a few numbers, reboot and fly.

To me it seems like electronics are taking out some of the fun. Remember when cars had carburetors and a distributor ? now you plug into the eecu and change a few numbers...

spending time, paying attention

I think FBL is a part of the demise, 3d another part. I’m not sure if any of us started flying radio control helicopters with the intention of developing them to the point of redundancy but thats where we seem to be headed. There seems to be a notion that we all want to fly competition 3d and demand constant improvement, this is pure marketing BS. I started this hobby because I absolutely love helicopters and live for RC helicopters. The BS 3d fraternity is destroying my hobby. In the model aeroplane world it is acceptable to fly a Tiger Moth or Piper Cub or any other aeroplane for that matter. They don’t seem hell bent on developing themselves out of a hobby. Why are we forced to only have the latest and greatest minimalist competition helicopters?

Lucky Hirobo still support their amazing flybar and glow powered machines.

I know I’ve descended into a rant but these are issues we as a hobby need to address otherwise in five to ten years time there wont be a hobby.

It is money
My opinion, it is the money factor. People really don't want to spend lot of money for helicopters. I love my flybar helicopters. Don't find FBL appealing to me, just too artificial for me.

I will post a video of my Concept SR soon. Just double checking everything before spooling it up. Heck, I got a GMP gyro with the package!

My flying is improving a lot, did nose in hover from different orientations. I am getting there soon enough. I just keep ignoring all the problems in the world and focus on improving my flying skills.

Just focus on improving flying skills. It is starting to reward me for all the hard work.

Lets face it guys....Not everyone has the ability to fly a heli. Lots of people have tried and not had much luck, crash, repair, crash repair. It gets old for some people and they move on to something else.

I get on here every morning and the flavor of the hobby has waned that is for sure, and I agree that it seems that all of the manufactures are hell bent on 3D mania. Any improvements on the airframe today is aimed at 3D and to hell with every one else. The helis today are so good it is like vanilla ice cream...it's there but so what. Nothing is left to play with but numbers.
