Those plugs work great, too...

Seems to work better with the enya #3 but it's cold in the UK and with the richer needle settings it does need a hotter plug. Maybe an os#7 would work even better?

Just a quick update. I took the ST out to change the bearings but could not get the liner out for love nor money! I had bought an SR dirt cheap off eBay and it was actually in better nick than the ST so I put it in. I had an enya#3 in it but had been told that the SR and SRX's like a cold plug to retard the timing. Sure enough on the first run at high throttle particularly full pitch climb outs you could hear the engine 'pinking'! No matter how much I wound the mid and high needles out it made no difference (also a sign the timing is too advanced). I then tried an enya#5 as was recommended to me and it made a world of difference! Sounds much sweeter and tunes much easier. This is also using 25% fuel in 5-10 degrees C with rich settings so the problem would be even worse in hotter temps and leaner settings on 30% so I would even recommend an enya#5 AND an extra head shim on 30%.

60% of the time, it works every time!

Hi Richard,

Your experience sound odd to me. All ys (except the 120) are design to run on 30%. There is a rule that says," the lower the nitro, the higher the compression, the colder the plug". And off course "high nitro is low compression is hot plug".

Your engine is not running good on high nitro (25%) with a hot plug, but good with a cold one. That tells me that YOUR engine has a too high compression.

A cold plug ALWAYS asked a leaner setting, but if your engine becomes hot, you have to go richer. The downside is that the cold plug is not hot enough to burn that extra fuel and your engine start running bad.
So you go leaner again and richer and leaner and finally you end up with a brown piston. In hotter weather it's even worse.

If you want POWER you have to burn NITRO as much as possible, that means you don't go leaner you go RICHER!!!!!!!. To burn al that fuel you have to put heat in your engine and you do that by using a high engine rpm and put a lot of load on the engine. (like top pilots). But to burn all that fuel you need a hot plug.

This says, there are pilots that have good result with the enya 5. That means that for them the weather conditions and there flying style are in balance for that moment and time of year. But if one off these conditions change the problems starts.

Frans.

All I know is my 91SR runs better on an enya#5 which fits with what I had been told.
