I don't think that was a "normal" drone it hit, there is a lot of damage and what is that in the evidence bag?? Kinda Looks like a piston? {Probably just some camera piece}

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Here is an idea, make it illegal to put a camera on an RC platform. I know I would have a hard time seeing my stuff 500 ft over my head

Oh, and the stuff in the bag looks like a DJI motor and arm to me

That's what I was thinking, but I don't know much about drones. From the fairly poor image of the 'evidence', it does appear to be a Phantom boom and nacelle.

I hope they find the person responsible and prosecute them. I can't imagine what the damage to one of those blades alone cost. That will have you set to never retire. Ouch..as the (rather new) saying goes...Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

You missed the point. If there was not an on board camera it is virtually impossible to recover a model from 500 ft. When is the last time you took your Logos up 500ft?

If you know who did this, or hear something, or see something on the inter web, stand up and report this jerk. There are already rules to cover this. Let's put this guy away for a while.

We don't need bans on cameras. We don't need more rules. Enforce the rules we have. Someone step up and snitch this guy/gal out.

Been a couple of months.....the summer heat has been brutal....

Didn't have an altimeter.....

But if there's a full scale aircraft anywhere near.....I keep clear immediately without question......

The next super power
Maybe the DJI will become the next to have air superiority

Told a friend he could try flying a drone that I have and it was easy .
You should have seen the disappointment on his face because it wasn't a DJI.
It was an mqx he asked to fly my 500 lol we had a good laugh. He thought an mqx was difficult.

It's done now. This is what we've all dreaded. The question now is what happens next?

Are you sure that...
...it wasn't the drone that was hovering when the heli hit it?

You may continue debating add nauseum what inevitably is happening anyways...FAA regulating the skies.

Even IF drone was registered, that piece they found is useless given suggested FAA number locations. They would have to dust for fingerprints and "maybe" get a hit in the system. Good luck with that if it belongs to a minor or someone whose prints has never been digitized and or taken...ever. So unless the rest is found or person comes forward or snitched on, it really wont matter. Read previous paragraph why.

When you have the likes of Amazon trying to get a piece of the sky, us hobbyist don't matter...an unfortunate truth.

In a nut shell
This is a money driven society-system and he who has the deepest pockets is listened to the most...another unfortunate truth.

It's an unfortunate series of events.

? Not impossible at all.

500ft is not that high for larger class helis. I have had 700s up over 1000 at auto contests, Telemetry verified. The disk is pretty small at that height and you have to make small corrections and watch how it drifts but it's flyable. 500 is fairly easy if you have good eyes. We oftenfly giant scale planks to these altitudes as well and the sailplane guys go a lot higher.

And before somebody says it, this is all completely legal when flying under AMA rules in uncontrolled airspace and maintaining LOS.

... Back on subject that doesn't change the fact this drone operator was someplace he shouldn't have been.ugh.

Regulationa
From what I have read the FCC regs states that unmanned areal vehicles are limited to 400ft and under unless they are at a registered flying field. It also states 100ft and lower if within 5 miles of an airport.

FAA advisory Circular 91-57 dates all the way back to 1981, and states simply that model aircraft operators – in this case people flying drones – cannot fly their crafts more than 400 feet above the ground, must keep them within sight, and should not operate within five miles of an airport without first informing the airport’s operating authorities or aircraft control tower.

Looks like stuff has changed over the last few years. I was looking into my 107 certificate a few years ago but never got that far....
