I would like to hear from some other folks on what their needle settings are. hi and mid.
Thanks Ken

Needle settings
High 1.5 turns
Mid 1.5 less 3 clicks
Idle factory setting
20# Optifuel

1 turn on the mid seems lean to me,especially on 30, Im using the same pipe.

Well yesterday just for ****s I pulled the engine and mounted it on a stand. I used the sab 1 pipe an 11x6 master air screw prop, 30% cool power muffler pressure to the tank.
Running wide open I got about 16500 rpm tach reading at 1.75 turns on the high needle.
After turning the HS needle clockwise from 1.75 turns 4 clicks it started to go lean and loose rpm.
The mid I started out at 2 turns. I ran the engine and turned the mid clockwise 3 clicks at a time until I got good throttle response it ended up at a 1/2 turn open from closed and did not effect the high speed setting, it also ran great with the mid needle closed. This motor has at least a gallon of fuel ran through it.
I have a friend with the same engine and heli acting the same way.
The mid needle seems more like an additional low needle setting and don't really do much at all.

I reinstalled the engine and flew the heli with the new carb settings
The engine performed very well at 1.75 on the high needle and .5 on the mid. The low speed is about 3 degrees lean from center.

We tuned another 600 with the same motor and got the same results
same fuel different pipe.

Thanks for the replies to this post I would still like to hear what other
setups are running at.

Ken, when I ran mine I was at 1/4 mid and 1 and 3/4 open on the high with a os#8 plug. Idle was stock setting and never moved. 3 different engines all ended up with these settings.
Sab-1 pipe.
Thing was a beast!

The low needle is for idle going to a hover
The mid needle is for hovering to wot.
The high is for wot .

I do low needle then the high needle
Keep the mid open more than the high needle while adjusting the high.
Adjust the mid so it transitions from a hover to WOT and back
without loading up on fuel or leaning out

Doing a bunch of aggressive pitch pumps helps to tune the mid

Seems easy enough

spending time, paying attention

+1 For ICUR1-2's approach the above settings are a good base but every engine, fuel & location (altitude) will be a little different not much but enough if you're on the edge of being lean. I run my stuff a little fat but if you need the power some fine tuning is going to be necessary to keep from having a lean run.

just my .02

Remember HZ-R will run much leaner needle settings on the mid than the muffler pressure HZ.

Pipes, fuel, plugs, head speed, type of flying, model heli, governor settings, altitude, air temp, humidity, number of hours on the engine, all affect the needle settings not to mention slight manufacturing tolerance differences between batches of motors and/or carbs.

1 turn open on the mid would be very lean on a HZ in the UK, 30% Optifuel, OS#8, 8.5:1 gear ratio, 2150 rpm, 3D... for example.

1 turn on the mid in a hotter country, same setup and flight on a HZ-R would be rich!

Tune by smoke, sound, pinch test and throttle hold test and your good to go.

60% of the time, it works every time!
