Cut blades. Can't lift off
HI all,

I owned a generic 4 channel helicopter with flybar. I modified the tail rod and made it longer. It flew pretty well, but was a bit on the tail heavier side. So i decided to take bigger blades from an old broken heli. But since it was a bit too heavy, I cut the blades to a smaller size. Problem is the heli won't lift off anymore. It still works well with the smaller blades that came along with it. Can anyone help?

in the picture - The red blades are the ones cut, which cannot lift. The black is the original which can lift.

Can anyone please help?

Does the curve under the blades has anything to do with lift?

Looks like one of the blades are on wrong, are you using blades from a conter-rotation heli, make sure blades you pick go in correct direction

Absolutely. You have a fixed pitch heli where lift is based on blade curvature and motor speed.

By making tail longer, you added weight, as you already know. For every 1 ounce you add to the back, you need 3 oz. forward.

You are also adding over 25mm of blade lenght which is heavier and more drag. Motor needs to make up for it.

Why did you make tail longer? Specially if it was already flying well.

Go back to original, problem solved.

as prev comments have said..

As to it being a fixed pitch, on the hummingbirds and other fixed pitch hellies we used to have twist the blades by hand to add pitch..

Yes -- the "curve" is important...it's the airfoil and is what makes the blade work.

You added a whole lot of blade, and a wider blade. I suspect the poor little motor just can't handle the extra load. Bigger isn't always better.

This. You got one on backwards.

They've had 6 months to figure it out. Hopefully they have gotten it in the air by now.
