The problem with wire in tube push rod is less than perfect output compared to input because of flexing inside the tube. When dealing with tail rotors on 3D ships in particular. There may be less than desirable results when driven by high rate gyro controlled servos. If that's acceptable, go for it.

How about a 'pull-pull' cable setup, that seems to be so popular with the fixed-wing guys?

Keep the cables tight and that'll work just fine - - but a solid pushrod is still better and simpler.
