Does the grub screw go to thru and pinch the tt on the inside while the other is pinching the outside?
No, the grub screw that goes through the hole in the torque tube does not contact the inner wall of the torque tube. It simply is in position to act like a pin.

I am not certain, after learning a lot last night about clamp loads and round stock and grub screws, that my solution is a viable long term solution. So I am going to revisit it.

You can do rough lathe work that would probably be good enough for the torque tube filler piece with a drill clamped in a vise or a drill press and just a coarse file to get it close and then step down to a smoother file !!

I also have done work with my drill press and a two position moveable vise clamp to actually turn pieces down with a normal lathe bit in that vise .Although I now own a 2K lathe as I kind of got hooked on that part of the hobby

if it is an 8mm align torque tube a piece of standard 6mm rod will slide inside just a bit of 5 minuet epoxy and you are done I have just done 2 tail drives exactly the same way with Align tubes and Vario gear boxes.

Just do not let the grub screw go through the hole you have drilled turn it so it clamps at another point.

If rotor head and blades show up today or tomorrow, I'LL BE THERE!

BUT - I ordered them from Vario, so I might be lucky and get them by the time Nats 2018 rolls around! So dont hold a spot for me this year . LOL!

Rollin' along.......

Boom be bonded....

Rear former and torque tube locator bonded in place.....

Quick overall view. Fuse with woodwork in place is surprisingly light.....
20170728_190651 by Steve Smith, on Flickr

Getting the horizontal stab end plates glued in place. And because I am an anal retentive goof, I am using a square to ensure they are at 90 degrees.....

And am redoing my torque tube to claw connections. Stated by gluing some 1/4" aluminum solid rod into the torque tube ends. Hysol fills in every nook and cranny. Will end up filing a small flat in the torque tube and only using one set screw to fix the claw connector to the torque tube.....

Tomorrow I work on getting the raised tail short torque tube and drive glued in place. Then she gets stuffed into the trailer for the road trip to IRCHA.

best not to file a flat on the torque tube the grub screws will bite into the aluminium and be quite sufficient.the tube is already weak enough with that hole drilled in it, the claw connector should have and needs 2 grub screws.

Not much of an update. Did more flying today than building. Cant do much until the hysol dries anyway.

Bonding the raised tail boom in place along with the wood former that adds some rigidity to the raised tail section.

Also got the TX programmed with the default settings for the maiden. ESC is programmed, governor is set to 1200rpm for the first flight. Hoping that will be a good speed for the 4 bladed head and some aggressive "canyon carving" flying.

Still waiting for Vario Germany to ship me the 4-blade head, swash, and main blades I ordered a couple of weeks ago. Was hoping to get them in time for IRCHA, but doesnt look promising. Oh well, they will get here when the get here.

I am interested in what hysol you are using. Where do you purchase yours? I need to have some on hand in my shop.

OK, back from an AWESOME IRCHA, so it's time to get this bird ready for Dalton.

Castle Talon 120 w/fan installed and programmed. Castle governor set to 1200rpm at 93%. Added an e-fuel gauge telemetry sensor to monitor mAh usage. Good to go....

Big 'ole X-Nova 300kV motor installed.....

Added a shaft connector to the tail pushrod. This will allow me the ability to remove the entire tail boom/torque tube assembly for future maintenance. Access to the rudder servo ball link is impossible with the mechanics mounted in the fuse......

ESC programmed, FBL programmed, TX programmed with base settings, tail drive system sorted out. Will be ready for some test flights at Dalton in a few weeks, unless less I get impatient and get some air under the skids before then!

Maiden!!!

1200 head speed. Using 115mm tail blades. All in all a successful maiden.
Need to tune out some sensitivity. I like doing all my maidens over water. It kicks the level of anxiety up a bit!
