Ultra Stick 25E

What I have on the motor is FlyHurricane HFSS-3542-1450 brushless outrunner motor.

Specs:

126.7g, Kv 1450, 45 amps 2s to 3s Lipo

Castle Creation 90 amps

Yeah I know the ESC is bigger than I need!

Here is my situation, Everything works great! The motor can make it hang in the air, but the problem is. I smell something sweet from the motor. I benched tested it and it doesn't get over 135F at full throttle. The ESC is at 93F.

Is the motor junk or should I continue flying it?

135F at full throtle....but for how long?

What size prop?

2S or 3S Lipo?

Capacity?

Ideally (best performance) that 3.5 lbs (plus) plane was made for 800Kv motor and 11x5.5 prop on 3S.

Figure 150 watts per pound for great 3D and 200watts for insane power.

A flying buddy just loves that plane at our field. Already has gone through 2...so far.

That sweet smell may very well be comimg from the LiPo.

Test 1
5 minute WOT with ESC at 50% power. (Radio setting from 100% to 50%)

Motor Peak 145 F
ESC peak 107 F
Lipo Peak 90F

Now charging lipo to see how much was consumed.

5 min WOT used 2060 mah the 80% rule is 2960 mah.

Running 412 mah WOT per minute so that translates into 7 minutes WOT or 10 minute of easy FF.

Does any of this info help?

I think Pistol Pete is on the right track. 1400KV might be a good winding for higher RPM smallish props, and speedy planes. When you get down to 1000KV or less they work better with larger props and lower speed or 3D types of planes. Depending on your goals a lower KV rating or a more suitable prop for that motor might be a good match for you.

Here is a good article and charts showing good prop and KV matches.

http://www.theampeer.org/ampeer/ampmay09/ampmay09.htm

Unfortunately that prop is not on the chart, kinda seems sorta in the right balpark. Anyway you get the general idea. If it were me i would go with a lower KV OR A 32 size for rocketship mode.

Spaceman provided a good link.

The numbers you posted do not look bad, really.

What threw me off is the 50% throtle and WOT in the same sentence, but I get it.

A cheaper route is to reduce the prop size to 10x5 versus a new motor.

Doing such will drop temp and if performance suffers a little, bump up the throtle percentage. Monitoring temp is a must and you are doing it.

As long as you get better than 1 to 1 ratio as in good vertical pull, you are good.

A watt meter would be ideal when dealing with electrics.

That is a fun plane...enjoy!

Had one, LOVED it!! Sold on a whim, been looking to replace it ever since.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!
