IR lasers... what a joke, cant believe the NAVY got suckered into this one...(well maybe I can)

then again they (the military) is STILL suckering the Taxpayer into paying for the F-35, that cant even fly in the rain can't fly in clouds or near lightning and is still not officially ready nor can it fly off from Carriers without serious structural changes.

They will simply use drones whose signature is that of a small bird (they need radar to see it first), fly it like a bird then coat the drone in IR reflective material (http://phys.lsu.edu/~jdowling/mit.html), then simply deposit a tiny chemical weapon on the ship/location...

Ain't that the truth....and even their stock is useless as a decent investment...

RM, please tell us what the problem is with the laser, with that I have to say the laser took a while/longer than I thought it would to damage the drone plane, but how big was that plane,, it would take much longer to drop a full size plane, I don't see them using it against tanks

the laser has to be focused at the same spot on the target for at least 5- 15 seconds (depending on material)... and as long as it has a clear line of site, no fog, no clouds, no rain.

Sure it was hitting that drone in the video...and it worked as long as the drone stayed relatively in the same orientation. But a smaller target, covered in IR reflective panels (ball shaped drone with first surface IR mirrors) like this:

that is constantly changing orientation flying through thick fog/clouds/rain would be immune to it until it was too late...

a demo of a smaller unit early in the project phase stated:
Boeing used the laser to burn holes in a stationary, composite UAV shell, to show how quickly it can compromise an aircraft. Two seconds at full power and the target was aflame.
their best defense is a tried and true weapon that cares not of fog, size, coating or movement... is it over Kill? Yes, but does it work? absolutely.

Lasers work, but they have their limits... they just dont have the instant terminal effects of a kinetic weapon in their current state of development.

and there you have it folks... a $5 response to your $40 million "over the past six years on research, development, and testing of the laser" weapon.

RM3- quick question for you.

From what believe the f22 raptor was still fairly new. Why did they go to an f35 so quickly and basically wash out the f22 raptor?
About 4-5 years ago they showed off the raptor as a new kind of aircraft for the military at the airshow . I mean yeah the f35 can take off and land vertical. But I can't understand why the raptor got pushed to the back burner.

money is my best guess... another would be that the US really had some desire for a Harrier type aircraft (VTOL) that could go supersonic (the harrier cannot) and also be stealth...

Hell.. why on earth do they wanna replace the A-10 Warthog despite its outstanding record of service, ease of repair, tank-like durability and overall cheap cost?... same reason is my guess, it doesn't make the manufacturer enough money.

i would put my money on this:

The F35 is more versatile than the F22....

F35 has one engine....has a bigger payload capacity....can "jump" while being supersonic....and is "stealthier"....

The F35 can fill more combat "roles".....and thus supposedly cheaper by filling more "roles".

According to the "brass".....

Imo, given what happened in WW2....a total all-out endeavor...the US overwhelmed its enemies by our sheer industrial output....of tens of thousands of aircraft alone....not to mention anything else used in combat....

Not to mention the fact that the US was separated by two very large oceans which kept our enemies far away.

Which is not the case today.....

In addition, these new aircraft carry potential hostages....

So, because military procurement is so slow, "drones" are not yet in the picture....other than the one's we've seen.

If they could take the pilot out of an F35, it would be much cheaper to mass produce.....and would provide that overwhelming superiority in numbers....for infantry support and airborne combat....in a non-nuclear confrontation....coupled with advanced space-based recon....

Oh, and I think we can sell all these little islands we own....as they were bought for use in re-fueling "coal-fired" naval vessels for use in WW1.....

I was Air Force 15years and loved it. But lets ask ourselves how effective this F-35 will be? Its not as agile as a mig 29 and if our adversaries can ever defeat its stealth then "welcome to the the F-35 SUCK!" Each plane will cost stupid $$ so our brass wont let their primadonna plane down in the dirt doing the A-10 mission.

F-35 is a jack of all trades master of none. The whole one airframe serves many branches for service/missions is a farce on the USA tax payer. The AF jet will have few parts in common wth its Navy/marine F-35 version. Congress prob wont buy enough of these F-35 to really matter (think F-22) so the Military Industrial Complex will start shopping its 6th gen F-35 replacement in another 10 years pissing away the $$ we already spent on the F-35 program.

Why didnt they start up F-22 production after only buying a handful of F-22? I bet anything taht production line has vanished on purpose! They want USA tax payer spending on gen 7 F-22.5 aircraft not thinking we could actually tweak a F-22 many years to come because they got so much of it right except its 1990 software/puter system which is already obsolete.

Yeh they truely got the F-22 mostly right. From what I hear the Avionics are "static" or cant be upgraded because its puter hardware is stuck in the 90s cant be changed or some silliness.

B-52 bombers/A-10 all can get glass cockpits/nav systems upgrades etc. F-22 can barely be fixed I hear about parts shortages its tooling/factory line disappeared?? WTH?? Where does a F-22 go for depot level inspection or repair??

Fact is a F-22 has no Lockheed support. So if one goes broke it sits with its AF unit eventually getting raped of its parts to fix other planes. I seen it with the F-16s and B-52H. I dont think either of those jets cost like a billion $ each like a F-22 did.

And if you put its stealth tech aside, can it fly out of a wet paper bag if said bag was named Sukhio SU-35? No it couldnt! For a fraction of the cost of a F-22 the Russians have a jet that can make a F-22 their prison bitch in a close dog fight.

While the Navy is forced to use fuel > 6 times the cost of normal fuel to power our ships.

But, Russia's economy is driven by oil and gas production for the most part....and OPEC is going to become toast.

They'll only be able to field just a few of their aircraft....used mainly in airshows...
