Photobucket's Business Model
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40492668

Recently I ran into the above article regarding Photobucket and a change in their business model. It seem that they somewhat quietly decided to no longer allow people to link to photos held on the Photobucket site- at least not without first paying a $400(!) annual fee.

While that, in and of itself, doesn't impact me or RunRyder too deeply, I was wondering how long it will take sites like YouTube to do the same?.?. YouTube could one day simply decide that while they will continue to allow you to upload videos to their site, linking to them in will cost you $400 a year. Can you imagine all the meaningless "place holders" on forums like this?

Any thoughts?

It totally sucks. I have been documenting my turbine powered scale build for the past 2 and half years on RunRyder (and other sites). Over 850 or so pictures linked in my build thread that can longer be viewed. Major bummer for sure.Steve

Man - that does suck.

For those following along, this is what a thread looks like if ss512 doesn't pay the $400:

Lately I've been thinking about the value of using services such as Photobucket and YouTube. Those that do some shooting will know that, without fanfare, the Hickok45 YouTube channel was terminated for a short time a while ago. Yes it's been reinstated but it did highlight that Google (YouTube) can and will simply change their business model and there is little we can do about it. This Photobucket thing is another example of thoughts I've been mulling over. Not one of his best videos but educational:

YES, my favorite you-tube channel makes an appearance on my favorite
heli site!!!

And yes, that was a scare for a bit w. Hickok too. Hope Photobucket
rethinks that fee.......especially for what you have going there Steve.
