Well its day one (pilot's meeting) and we are already having a good time. I think we counted 6 or 7 entrants. Static starts tomorrow at 9am. The low country boil ( really the only reason I came ) was excellent as usual thanks Darrell.

My 10 cent NATS summary,

First and for most.. Thanks to everyone for coming out and participating. Really not my place to say that but it sure made for a fun contest. To me “more” does not make a great contest.. but there should be a point of practical. And.. we “to me” hit that number. (13 total)
My 11 hour drive was awarded with good friends and some super flying. Thanks to all. Heck.. Darrell high speed touch and go was worth it.

Other notes:
518 went without a hitch. We had a shootout for positions. NOTE TO ONES SELF.. “STATIC UP!”
I now feel like I have a good home with Scale Heli flying and it’s time to up my game. Winning two of the three flying rounds (remember we drop one) and having a poor subject (lee county EC-145) equals 3rd place..lol. That’s OK. I had fun! I have been learning a lot about this machine and it quirks. The lessons have proven invaluable.

Team scale was a tick confusing to me and left me with more questions than answers. Why is it that the builder does not “Static” the model? It’s there build.. Its possible that the builder had/has no idea they are competing in an AMA NATS contest. I just don’t know. I suspect the intent of “team scale” should be brought up and chatted though. Is it a dumping ground for past 518 machines?.. or is it a “team effort”? What does the pilot tell the judges about the static.. Its his.. or I bought it that way? Truth is if the builder does not static the machine then it should just be a flying points contest. That would be cool. (will likely ruffle some feathers with that but OK.. if all else it’s a miss understanding on my part. Just let me know, lol…).. if you have an RTF.. this is your class?....................wait… I don’t know…lol

Sport Scale. WAS A BLAST.. we did have a tick of confusion as to what “makes a sport machine” but the intent is now very clear and we are in good hands. To sum it up.. its 518 with a weighted scorning system. More focus on flying and less on building to help the budding builder get a foot hold. Seems to be working well. I have other questions but not for this post. I personally would like to loosen this up from 518 a bit but its working now so maybe that’s not best. We will let the chips fall for a time. Either way it was a huge success.

Also.. those not at the event do not know that we flew under a rewright set of rules from the AMA. They are not voted in yet BUT.. we had copys available to all that participated and a vote among all competitors was taken. The vote was to go with the rewrite. It WAS a success. Truth is it was VERY S M O O T H!
Congrats to all the winners and thank you Mark Allen for CDing the event.
Pilot/Builders….IF you are on the fence about making this event next summer. DO NOT hesitate. Start planning now.. build and document well, build a flight routine, and PRACTICE.

End

"Nationals"
Just to add to what Mike said, even though it is the "Nationals", over the years, Peter, Darrell, and now myself, have tried to get ALL types of scale machines/fliers to compete and Darrell came up with the provisional classes to make this happen and find a place for all levels. Of course this was done with the thought that if someone starts out at either the "Sport" or "team" level, they would be enticed/seduced into moving into the 518 group.

And for me, I do realize that this is the "Nationals" and it is a competition but I feel my job as a CD is to make it as enjoyable and relaxing as possible for all involved.

So no matter where you may feel you are on the scale with your "scale" machine (pun intended), please really consider coming to the NATs next year....or at least the IRCHA scale competition. I can't guarantee where you will end up but I can guarantee you will be with a bunch of great guys and have a great time!!!!

Grim, I owe you big time because I wasn't really planning to attend this year since my machine was far from ready but you definitely helped to make the move to grab a machine and go.
as stated, the event was a blast and went very smoothly. It was a close race for sure and only a short margin made the difference in where you finished.
good fun and some really good flying.
I will be trying my best to make it again next year with god's willing.

I have GOT to figure out a way how to get time off work for next years NATS. You guys are NOT allowed to hoard all the fun and keep it yourselves!
