Hello rr, I want to buy some sort of laptop that will run Heli-X (or equivalent sims, Phoenix or others). In the past I have used Macbook Pro to run sims with acceptable results, but I am looking at saving some $$ and get a PC. Can anyone suggest a decent laptop that will work, I am on a budget and not really wanting to spend more than I have to, used is fine.

The Heli-X site system req states:

For V 6.0 to work, you need a graphics adapter AMD/ATI Radeon 9500, NVIDIA GeForce 5 FX, Intel GMA 4500, or better, supporting OpenGL 2.0 or better.

This page has an Asus ROG GL552 as a good choice for under $1000

However I know there has to be plenty of used machines out there that would work fine. Any tips are appreciated as I am not that familiar with the PC world I only know they are less bucks than a Mac.

It's best to run on desk top format. Very intensive on the graphics card ... that is why lap tops heat up and battery life is diminished.

If you are going to plug it in, minus as well use the desktop. LOL!!!!

Any desk top made within the past 8 years would work (as later by as you don't have a ton of various from surfing the net).

When using the SIM, it's best to stand up and mimic the position you would be flyer at the field.

Alienware has been making specialized high performance gaming laptops for years. I'm sure there are other brands as well.

laptop for sim and good performance
have a look at Dell Auction, they have commercial laptops that are return machines from business leases that can be purchased refurbished WITH warranty from Dell Computers. I have bought quite a few in the past and have not had any problems with customer service or hardware failures. They offer on site repairs if it's something like a screen or peripheral device that burns out. I've had them send a tech to meet my son in his college parking lot to replace a faulty screen on his laptop before free of charge. I would recommend anything with a minimum of 1GB video memory and at least a 450 series or better intel graphics chipset. You can find a decent laptop and finance it through dell for $300-$500 easily.
