Cruz Velazquez Acevedo began convulsing shortly after he drank the liquid methamphetamine he’d brought with him from Tijuana, Mexico.

The 16-year-old had just crossed the U.S.-Mexico border to San Diego and was going through a checkpoint at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. He was carrying two bottles of liquid that he claimed was apple juice. U.S. Border Patrol agents told him to drink it to prove he wasn’t lying, court records say.

The teen took four sips.

Then, he began sweating profusely. He screamed and clenched his fists.

In a matter of minutes, his temperature soared to 105 degrees, his family’s attorney said. His pulse reached an alarming rate of 220 beats per minute — more than twice the normal rate for adults.

“Mi corazón! Mi corazón!” Acevedo screamed, according to court records — “My heart! My heart!”

He was dead about two hours later.

Now, more than three years after his death, the United States has agreed to pay Acevedo’s family $1 million in a wrongful-death lawsuit brought against two Border Patrol agents and the U.S. government.

Death by criminal stupidity . . . should be fined for wasting law enforcement's time, not rewarded . . .

Friends don't let friends become electrotarded . . . .

I am sorry to hear of the death of this 16 year old boy. The Border Patrol agents have test kits to verify drugs in a safe and efficient manner. They did not adhere to protocol and endangered the life and ultimately caused the death of a minor. However funny they thought it might be to see if he drank the mixture, or what would happen if he did, they are responsible for his death. The fact that he was acting as a drug mule is completely separate from what the border patrol agents did. If they would have followed protocol and tested the mixture, no one would have died. They lost the case due to these simple facts.

I think you misunderstand my position. I think anyone bringing drugs into the country should be captured and treated as the law dictates. This young man should have been arrested and made his way through the judicial process and then should have been returned to Mexico.

The problem lies within responsibility of the Border Patrol agents once the young man was in their custody. Once he was in their custody, anything they did that directly or indirectly caused harm to him fell upon their shoulders.

Our laws and judicial process, although not perfect, are better than most throughout the world.

Did the guy know it was not apple juice? If so it is on him and the thugs. If he didn't know, it is on the thugs, and him for believing anyone would ask him to carry "apple juice". Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

4 drinks of that crap... and not apple juice.... he will be a Darwin Award winning moron.

you have two choices at the airport when bringing fluids over 4oz... drink it or toss it.

Guess I should try the same act and sue United Airlines for 10 million, hopefully I dont croak playing the lawsuit lottery

Now every Mexican national is going to try this stunt in some form or fashion.

this story proves one thing and one thing only.... you can get rich by killing your own kid with no risk to ones self. Now the family will live like kings all thanks to a sacrificial offspring they will honor with a mural on their 15ft fireplace somewhere in mexico.
Our laws and judicial process, although not perfect, are better than most throughout the world
Our system is the only one in the world that rewards stupidity on a daily basis... BTW I Hear North Korea (among others like middle east) have great systems were stupid people DONT get rewarded at the expense of the government or tax payer.... corrupt they are, but reward the stupid they dont.

Here's my position on this. Life is full of choices , he chose poorly.
Now I get to pay for it. We need a wall and we need it yesterday.

Honorable mention (Future Darwin Award winners)
Rivers Go In Circles, Right?
2016 At-Risk Survivor
Confirmed True by Darwin

(12 July 2016, Michigan) Stupidity doesn't get worse than this. Three bikini-clad women were stranded on the banks of the Muskegon River with no food, no shelter, no clothing, when their first river tubing excursion became a "Naked and Afraid" predicament of their own making!
A few hours before, while launching their new tubes at the Maple Island Bridge in Muskegon, they asked a passing stranger how to get back upstream. The stranger told them the river will make a big loop and circle around to take them back to the car. Using this joking advice to plan their trip, they gullible group set off downriver.

As dusk approached, the women realized that the river was NOT gonna circle back. They had been duped! They beached their tubes on a remote stretch of river and began to holler for help, having neglected to bring a cell phone, either.

Twenty hours after drifting away from the bridge they were saved by chance by a drift fisherman who heard the commotion and called 911. Rescued only three miles downstream of the launch point, we wonder why no one said, "Let's walk back to the car." What makes this situation even more ridiculous is that they were all local to the area!

Even though the Darwin Award winner is dead, we do have the satisfaction knowing he will not be importing any more meth. I say let em all drink product. This will get around in their world quickly. Testing every soda can is not free either.
