castle logs
I pulled logs from the HV80 ESC for a few flights at Birmingham last weekend and thought I’d share as there were many that asked about currents, flight time, etc. . This is my Synergy E5 that is stretched to a 700 using 696/116 tailblades and 12S/4350 flghtpowers. Tail is modified for a 5.45 ratio, it’s 9.75 lbs RTF, and I’m spinning 1150 and 1450 on the head with 16/16 on pitch. The majority of the time is in 1150 now as I love the feel and don’t really need the 1450 flight mode, although it’s fun to flip into it every now and then. A little at the biggining is in 1450, as well as a few seconds near the end, to climb up for an auto. This flight was about 15 and a half minutes of “power on”, plus the auto. Keep in mind this isn’t just hovering, but smooth, flowing, old fart freestyle, pirouetting aerobatics, backwards and sideways aerobatics, hesitation rolls and tumbles forward, backwards, sideways, backwards, sideways, and pirouetting cubans, slow tic tocs moving around,.. etc. It’s a pretty efficient setup that I was super happy with till looking at these logs. It has some excess power that I don’t need, so there is some lost efficiency there. Temps are pretty “cold”, including motor, which was checked most flights and was within a couple degrees of 90f at end of each flight. I really don’t need the 13.5 to 16 minute flight times I’m getting. I very rarely use full collective, and I really don’t “need” it when I do, it’s just fun to see how much actual performance it has at the low power level. So,.. everything points towards things like using a lower KV motor ( This one is already rewound to 350 since the lowest kv hacker is 400, and I’m at lowest timing in esc), gearing deeper (already smallest pinion and largest maingear from synergy), spinning the head faster (don’t need any more oomph), using smaller batteries or esc (Already barely hit CG, so would be tailheavy with either an HV60 ESC, or smaller batteries), or using longer blades (have 716’s, won’t work with the 116 tails, and tail not acceptable with 106’s). I could improve efficiency just a leetle bit more if I wanted to have a motor rewound, or went to smaller batteries or esc, but I can’t think of a good reason to. Getting more than acceptable flight times, with more than acceptable performance, so I guess I’m pretty much stuck, with no more practical room for improvement.

Gary,

I'm sure the troll will be along shorty to give you some tips on how to improve things!
Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

Something I find very interesting (not new info, it just gets clearly illustrated in the log graph) is that peak power is 3.46 horsepower. I always hear a comment or two about how someone wouldn't be happy with the power level at 1150,..they want "pop". of course a low headspeed setup doesn't have pop,.. but the actual horsepower peak is only slightly less than a 105 which is 3.7, and more than an old 91, which is 3.4, just used as torque rather than ridiculous rpmsGary Wright

Great looking data log and thanks for sharing. You can visualize the auto rotation at the end when voltage dips. Sweet.~~Enjoying the hobby one flight at a time~~

this is of course one of three sessions in the log (can only get 3 full flights logged due to sample frequency and buffer size, guess they didn't expect 15+ minute flights )

I find it interesting that the temp starts cooling immdiately on shutdown. I thought that would rise briefly but it doesn't. Also interesting the temp seems to climb then stabilize around 3~4 minutes, then start very gradually dropping from about 7 or 8 minutes, till the end. Must be differences in flying at that point. I sort of run out of things to do and start repeating things, trying to make them smoother.

Although an additional expense, the jLog S32 supports logging to a SD card of any available capacity. It also has an on-board real time clock so log entries are timestamped as well.
