happens alot at most machine shops... especially CNC shops where operators are not top of the line or machines are in a state of breaking down often.

Old story about a shop that was near a lake.... one summer the water dried up... only to reveal hundreds of ruined parts in various stages of manufacture, sitting in the mud... conveniently about throwing distance from the shop door.
showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

When I first started helis I saved all my crashed parts in a large clear plastic bag.....It got so full that it was almost depressing. But it was a good reminder of improvements! Finally tossed it all!Bill Whittaker

When I first started..
I saved all my heli related purchase receipts..I thought it would be fun to someday total it all up..I threw that away a few yrs. ago.

That reminds me something that I've seen Gordie (GM1) say before about practicing for contests, and I paraphrase, "...You will see progress at the bottom of a 55-gallon drum of fuel".

Pretty much the same idea.

Correct. Even when everyone is on their game, when you are starting a new program on a CNC you often run a couple test parts to verify everything looks good and the fixturing is right before running production. The test parts go in the scrap bin with the cutoffs. Full scrap bins go to a scrap dealer and eventually make their way back to a foundry to get melted down to make new billet.

Some shops will use throwaway materials for making test cuts. They sell blocks of machining wax for this purpose and another material that has a consistency somewhat like MDF. This is good for validating the shape but doesn't tell you if the speeds and feeds are correct for the material you are cutting so unless the part is very large and expensive many outfits just cut a test directly in aluminum or steel.

Where I work now I don't have the luxury of a setup piece or making scrap especially like that. The parts I am in charge of machining range from 2k-25K each. Fortunately we only use simple 5-axis mills and lasers compared to the 13 axis mill-turns where I used to work.

We have a new (to us) Citizen M232-V which is a 7 axis CNC sliding head lathe and I can tell you our scrap bins are filling up rapidly! Lots to learn! 60% of the time, it works every time!
