Yamaha sounds slightly quieter at idle with no load, Honda is certainly quieter anywhere above and idle and runs lower rpm for similar loads. Yamaha is lightest and smallest.

Honda has plug outlets on the end, Yamaha has outlets on face. This can make a difference when you consider how you will position the generator under a work table or truck bed.
Enjoy things that money can buy IF you don't lose the things money can't buy.

Thanks for all the responses. Its all good info. But I'm still wondering does no one have experience with the off brands. Or are they junk and everyone is just stearing clear of them

Honda 1000
If the 1000 is the size you need, go with the Honda... I bought mine in 2006 and sold it this year for 550.00, only because I needed to step up to the 2000 size.. clean, consistent, reliable, and service available if ever needed!!
You will pay a little more, but you won't be sorry you took the leap...
Good luck with you selection..

The fine print you have to look at on reviews of the off brands is whether they actually are able to deliver and/or or maintain rated nominal output. "2000w peak" is useless if the genny starts having a cow under 60-75% load. Honda and Yamaha are pricey......and you only will buy one or the other once.

Ben Minor

Edit: for those who have not seen a generator fail to meet published specs, I mean by "having a cow" that it trips the overcurrent breaker every time the load kicks in and when that load is well below what the generator should tolerate or the thing has to run WFO at what should be only 70% load.

$429 - that's a good deal!

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-2-...2200G/205227796

I've had mine for several years. If someone gave me back my money and I had to go buy a new one I would not hesitate to go buy my Ryobi again.

Two things I did to mine:

1. Added a cheap hour meter. I would highly recommend doing that to any generator you buy.

https://www.amazon.com/Docooler%C2%...f/dp/B00A43PKLC

2. Added a fuel cut off. Also very cheap. I can now run my carb dry for storage without having to empty the tank first.

https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-...8/dp/B002HPX2V0

My #1 recommendation, change the oil after the first gallon of fuel. I waited the 25 hrs as recommended in the manual, way too long. That oil was full of gunk.

As for everyone that says a 1000W generator would work for the field, 100% agree and it'd be way easier to haul around. But if you are going to have just one in your garage a 2000W is useful for potentially running your house refrigerator if needed. I've also used mine to run a 10" table saw.

I've thought about buying a 2nd one, 1000W generator. I wouldn't be too scared to try an off brand suitecase style one of the price is right.

I'm staying away from any open frame generator. They are loud.

I have a very low hours Honda 1000W which I will sell for $500. I am reluctant to ship it, but if anyone who wants it is going to OHB I can bring it there.

It has only been used for charging helis at OHB over about 3 years and it only gets started to charge one set of batteries. It still starts easily and runs well and of course you will be able to check it out before parting with your cash.

PM me if you are interested
