I played around the last two days with some low head speed. I have the Xnova 930 kv motor w/ 20T pinion and HW 100A ESC V3 using internal gov. I fly alone so I have not tached it yet but I set throttle curves at 70% and 75%. I used Mr. Mel HS calculator and it gave me a HS of 2669 @70% and 2860 @ 75%. These HS are a rough estimate because as I said I fly alone and not able to tach HS.

It did fly good at 75% TC. I did not reach any bad issues because I did not push it to the edge but I would say if you push hard the tail will let go. At 70% TC it will fly but you are really over the edge of tail holding. As long as I was smooth the tail would hold fine but if I hit collective and cyclic hard the tail would let go.

The tail held good in smooth backwards flight and tail first loops. I`m not a hard 3D flier but as long as I was smooth on controls it was ok. If I was to keep flying in this range of HS I see the need of a 18T or 19T tail pulley and a front tail drive gear with more teeth(85T to 90T).

I also kept my settings the same on collective (12.6/-12.6) and cyclic (10 /-10).

I stretched another 380 just to run lower head speed. I made my first two flights today after setting it all up. I kept the Scorpion 1000kv motor in it for now. I have to say I like it.

Setup....
1000kv w/ 19T pinion
HW 60A V4 ESC using internal gov.
Throttle curves @ 67%, 70%, & 73%
19T tail gear w/ 72mm Halo tail blades
Collective... 11.5/-11.5
Cyclic.........10/10

Left all other settings in Spirit the same as when it was 380. I did raise tail gain to 65%. I flew most of the two flight at 67% TC. The day was crappy with dark skies so took it a little easy in case the tail let go so I would not lose my orientation. The tail was holding good so decided to not install 80mm Halo tail blades. I adapted the KSE CF landing gear to the Lynx mounts I have on heli. I removed the Lynx CF landing gear and turn the back mount around. I slotted the hole in back leg on KSE landing gear to line up with mounting hole. Using the Lynx mount changes the angle of KSE landing gear and actually raises heli up some.

I just finish checking the batteries I used today for the two flights. I used a Pulse 2600 and 1800.

I used the 2600 to recal. the HW gov and then flew with the same battery without recharging it. I flew for 4:00 and only took out 1298mah for flight and recal gov. I flew mostly at 67% TC but did flip through 70% & 73% for a short time.

I then flew @ 67% TC with the 1800 for 4:00 and only used 1068mah.

I was doing tic-tocs, aileron tioc-toc, flips, rolls, backwards figure 8 flight, big funnels(pie pans),& piro flips.

What is the ideal Headspeed for the 420. I'm doing general flying and some inverted stuff. I'm running 2800 , 2900 , 3100

I had my Agility at like 50% realized yesterday in Vbar Neo.. whoops!

I would stay with your stated head speeds. I flew 2800-3200 for my first 24 flights on my G420. I enjoyed the way it flew.

I have three 420s now. I decided to set one up strictly for flying with a lower head speed. The other two are setup for higher head speed now.

G420.... xnova 930kv w/ 22t pinion
D420.... alzrc 1000kv w/ 21t pinion
D420.... scorpion 1000kv w/ 19t pinion

I went flying today with all three 420s. I had a blast. I have a tach so I decided to check the one I setup for low head speed on the ground at zero pitch. At 67% TC it was at 2350 RPM and at 73% TC it was at 2565 RPM. So I was within 50 RPM of what I thought it should be at. Since I want to be at 2400 and 2600 I bumped the TC`s up some.

It is soft at 2400 RPM but is flyable. It is very much flyable at 2600RPM. I flew four batteries today through it. I flew 95% of the flights at 2400 RPM. I even installed some Rail 80.6mm tail blades for one flight at 2400 RPM.
