I have been setting up and flying BeastX for a couple of years now. I seem to be getting good results. I own three. One is the plus HD. I am not using the integrated Spektrum receiver models.

So, what am I missing? Why would I look at another system. Have to admit that I like the Skokum GPS system for photography.

I am not hard 3D pilot. I fly sport with some aerobatics. All electric helis at the moment considering glow.

And why would you? you're getting the results that you expect from Beastx.Like you said, you're not a 3D flyer.I flew the Beastx for a couple of years and did some 3D with it and was happy with the results.
But I made the switch to Vbar due to flying other friends heli's with Vbar just 6 months ago and felt the performance difference between the two.The Vbar is better for 3D ( in my humble opinion),but the Beastx would be more than enough for Apv,scale flying, sport flying and mild 3D.

Don't buy Skookum.
I'll second that they are outdated and finnicky to tune in.

Have you tried others ?

I really like MSH brain and ikon.
Also have an older mini v-bar though it is outdated it still performs very well

spending time, paying attention

I was all beastx then vbar. I decided to give the spirit pro a go. I've now changed everything to spirit. It also comes with rescue as a bonus. The rescue is the same firmware as the bavarian demon. Try one u won't be dissatisfied.

I'm with Shiver.....I've flown beastx and vbar as a sport pilot and a buddy told me about the Spirit fbl unit. It's easy to setup and it has the rescue feature, I know own 2 spirits and 2 microbeastx plus units. I'm considering selling the 2 microbeastx units and get 2 more spirits. They are super easy to setup and in my opinion fly great plus the tech support from James is great. Just my 2 cents...

That (Spirit FBL) is a system that I had not heard of... I will look into it.

It is always good to break out of the box and see what else is available.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

In the event you decide to fix something that isn't broken, look at the MSH Brain 2

Stay away form the Skookum SK-720 with GPS.
It is a huge investment (almost $1k for gyro, GPS and altimeter), hard to get setup correctly and problematic to keep the GPS online (the gyro will throw a "high vibration" alarm and the GPS will drop offline).

If you want to go in that direction, look at the quad-copter based controllers.

Believe 1/2 of what you see and none of what you hear.

It is when you progress and discover the bad tendencies of a FBL or you want more features that it makes sense to consider "upgrading". Upgrading is in quotes for a reason. I have tried various FBL systems over the years and I have yet to find one that is perfect. There are advantages and disadvantages to every one from flight characteristics to setup, features and interface.

I slowly moved from BeastX to Helicommand to Vbar (with a few others thrown in for testing) and as I progressed, I could tell a difference in flight characteristics and immunity to vibration.

If you are happy with BeastX, keep them. If you want to try something new, go for it. Just like air frames, different pilots will have different criteria and opinions on FBL units.

Mine was a case of just trying out something new. It was also very well priced so I thought nothing to lose. I was sceptical at the start. I was a vbar fanatic to put it mildly. Now I only fly spirit. For the price it's a fantastic unit. But each to his own. All I can say is try it.

I should say that I have a 3gx system, and 2ea 3g systems. Have not had good luck with those. I also have one other system which did not pan out for me.

"If it ain't broke"... I am just looking and kicking tires. Nice to look at the new corvette, just don't want the payments.

Thanks for the comments on the Skookum. The pixhawk might be able to give me a GPS stable platform.

I use 3 x 700N equipped all with Beastx Plus.

All of them used for F3C contest in sports class.

Beastx hovers pretty decent and aeros are also very good. Some figures with quite gyro demanding fast reverse condition (e.g. pull back with reverse 1/2 loop) are done with no issues.

For me the only negative point is not having the chance to set different cyclic gain in different flight modes. Once set the dial, all the flight conditions use that single value.

Out of that, if you are comfortable with the Beastx, machine performs well, you know how to adjust it... I wouldnt change.

99% of this hobby is mind set 1 % heli gear. Cheapest way to fly better is invest in fuel/batteries/spares when crashes appear...

The rest is just messing around and burning money, which is other different and much extended hobby as well... ( good hobby for heli / electronics manufacturers indeed)

My first helis five years ago were beastx (AR7200BX). I switched to Bavarian Demon because I wanted Rescue and they have been great. Now you can have Rescue with beastX. I just bought a new Align 550X and it comes with BeastX plus. I bought the firmware upgrade so it will have Rescue. So I guess I will be trying BeastX again.

On the other hand, BD is releasing the new Axon which is supposed to be available imminently. Have to keep my eye on that.

I've always flown BeastX (AR7200BX). Then I tried something different (the one everyone raves about), I switched straight back to BeastX!

About the BeastX only being good for scale, sport and mild 3D... have you heard of Dunkan Bossion?? World Champion?!

Here's a little video:

. hands free first take off
This is why they appeal to beginners and why they are so popular.

However to people who can already fly and spent years on flybarred machines the vbar feel can be a bit robotic, like it's flying the heli for you, again another reason for their popularity. Horses for courses!

these guys are not beginners and the vbar can be programmed to fly hardcore

and lots of pros use the vbar

Watch at YouTube

Eazy to program the 3gx is the easiest to program to me
the vbar is also easy after a little research or youtube video.

skookum was kind of complicated to me
i never likeed the beast x hated the a-z setup.

I've set up a lot of gyros in my time vbar far the best to me and not because it was eazy any fbl gyro setup properly will fly hands-free
just my 2 cents
