Hey all,

I wanted to say hello again after a few year hiatus. So, what's trending right now? Any new tech you recommend to get back in the game? Would like to here from you all again!

What were you flying when you left?

I'd say in the last couple of years not much has changed with the exception of telemetry. A few new radios have come out to take advantage or make better use of it.

Aside from that just your usual hardware/kit refreshes.

if it ain't broke, break it.

I was flying a Kyosho Caliber 5 and a Freya 90 FB'd using a Futaba 8FG. The birds were dated but they flew great! I had to sell everything and haven't been able to pick it up again. I do enjoy watching all the videos and viewing the pictures. I am starting to notice the lack of changes. How is the little GAUI nitro bird doing? I cant remember the model number... I cant say that I was great at programming the flybarless units although I thought they look really cool!

GAUI N4

It's a nice little bird if a bit underpowered compared with current 55 sized models or comparable 500-class electrics. But plenty capable and cheap to run compared to a 50. i think it falls between a .30 and a .50 (which would make since as it's on a .37) A guy at my club has one and I like the looks of it a lot. Gaui parts aren't exactly cheap though. So crashing any of their stuff can take a bite of the ol wallet.

The move to fbl will be a learning curve. But it's not bad. I especially like the beastx based systems for beginners to FBL. Very simple to set up and adjust. And while I don't fly them now, I have in the past and the difference in flight characteristics between more complex controllers is not worth the frustration early on (meaning it will fly fine while you get your feet wet in the FBL world).

If you're on a budget you still can't go too wrong with align. Plenty of parts support and relatively cheap. I'd spend most of my time looking at a new radio. There are some nice ones out now. And the telemetry options are worth researching.

if it ain't broke, break it.

In all honesty, I don't know that I would go back to the large helis. For filming purpose's on my Vlog and Blog site, I have my eyes set on the DJI Mavic. If I were to get another heli, my favorite has always been the nitro .50's for some reason. I don't know that I would go back to Futaba either. I would have to check their line out again. I like the B-N-F functionality and appeal of Spektrum. Did Futaba ever come out with a B-N-F version?

What happened to the 8FG?

IMHO Mr. Botos has a real winner in the 50 size range it's the Synergy N5c, mine is rock solid...and I fly it with a Futaba 8FG with a iKon FBU

1helimech, I DO like the looks of this!

Especially that it's nitro. I still can't wrap my head around the cost of batteries! Unless they have drastically gone down in the past years..

So, I don't want to start a "mine's bigger" contest. So, I will explain why I chose the .50/ 600 size heli over the .90/700. My financial situation chose for me.

The only way I could fly was to buy, sell and trade my way up to the Caliber. I bought the air frame for less than $100 and started buying and fixing the bearings in blown out OS engines and sold those until I could afford to keep one that I fixed.

So I threw that in the bird and continued to buy and sell. I got the bird to the point that I felt would be airworthy. It was a Hodge-podge of electronics, but it would fly. So I built my first nitro heli!

I did mention I had a Freya .90. The airframe was acquired through a RC plane trade and I applied the same principles learned with the .50 and started buying and selling again. I would buy older spec'd OS .90's, rebuild and sell till I made enough to keep one. Older equipment was all I could manage, but I had a .90! Sadly I didn't fly it much. Turns out I was too scared of crashing it and not able to rebuild. The thing about Hirobo birds, as anyone who's dealt with them knows, the parts are crazy expensive. I would not be able to rebuild it. So there it sat. It sure looked pretty!

Physics is clear that the larger the diameter and greater the mass rotating force has the more stable it becomes.

Glad you're back!
Lots of good birds out there.
I've flown my first Align electric and like it.
My NX4 is always fun to fly.
I have a lot of nitro Raptors of all types and still love them.
The used market has set me up for a long time with all types.
Electronics and especially FBL have really made flying fun.
Nitro is the way to go IMHO.
I got tired of driving 160 miles round trip through awful Dallas Metroplex accidents to get fuel. I'm now GLAD to pay 30 bucks for shipping on a case of nitro. Darn cheap compared to 3 hour minimum round trip to pick up. Just my time is worth way the hell more the $30.00 hazmat fee. I don't even mind paying premium price for the Kool Aid. I love the smell and the sound of nitro.
If I was to start all over, I think I'd go with Synergy. Matt has a kajillion happy customers. They don't look too bad either.
No matter which way you go, I hope you have a great time tinkering, flying, and in general enjoying helicopters again!

Wayne

I love the smell of nitro in the morning.
RIP Roman

Hey Einzelganger, thanks for your comments. I'm ok with paying "fuel tax". Paying more over time, for me at least, is better than $100's on batteries and chargers upfront....Now, I'm not knocking battery powered heli's, I'm just not there yet..... I will have to check the used market for heli and radio. It will be some time before I get some funds available to spend on "yet another hobby" as my wife would argue.... But you can't beat the community!

I've been gone for so long!!!
Yup,i too been gone for some time due to reasons i just dont want to discus here,i am slowly coming back, never sold my old helis i just kept on thinking that i would make the time to get out and fly, well that day never came and now i am finaly doing it,

i am still flying the old trex 600 nitro pro and 600 electric, nothing wrong with old flybar helis but flybarless is way better,

if you are on a badget you could just grab an old trex for cheap than work your way up to the newer ones,

I flew this weekend with my buddy cudaboy_71 and i gotta say i was very imprrssed with his protos 700 and from talking with him and watching him fly it it really is a good heli at a affordable price with a good parts suport,

What ever it is you fly id say just fly what you can and enjoy it,is not the heli that makes a great pilot,is the skils behind the sticks

Take offs are optional, landings are mandatory

Just to chime in once more I also have a Protos Max V2 (700) and it is by far one of my favorites so smooth and sold in the air. You can get the heli and ikon FBL for $699.00 is a great deal IMHO and you can get an align motor for it for $132.00 but the battery is the pit fall they run around 270.00 for the 5000ma 12s 45c... best of luck on your return to Heli's hope to see you in Huntsville OR B'ham ....The ditch is a great FF too...
