GV-1 on 2S LiPo ?
Hi,
I using my R90 with HV servos on straight 2S LiPo power.Now I plan bring into play GV-1 Futaba governor .
In manual for GV-1 is mentioned operating voltage 4,8- 6V. I know, when GV-1 was released , there no HV servos existed.Can I use this governor straight on 2S LiPo or not ?

Yes, it is. But in case of old Futaba receivers, there was also mentioned energy range 4,8 V - 6,0V, and they work with 2S LiPo setup without problem.JAN

I would not be willing to take the chance on HV. That device was designed long before HV was in use.

Operating voltage range: DC 3.8V~6.0V

I use mine with a 2S A123 LIFE @ 6.6V

Ran the gv1 on 2s lipo for many flights without a problem. 2s life should be no issue.

I'm sure it worked. I'm also sure it worked for those who have done it for a while. What you cannot predict is how hard you are pushing the voltage reg on the board when the supply voltage is well above mfg spec. I can only assume Futaba specified 4.8-6v for a technical reason. The value of the GV-1 is no big deal. Just make sure you are ok with the consequences of a possible crash if your unit lets out the magic smoke.

I'd ask Futaba for you but the GV-1's engineer has retired.

Interesting subject. I had a look at my GV1 Circuit Diagrams:

The internal logic voltage of the unit is 5 volts via a buck/boost converter with input specs of 2volt to 10volt DC(a RICOH RS5RJ5045 regulator) That is a 5 volt 450mw max dissapation unit.

The input to the 5v regulator is from the channel inputs from the reciever, and all tantalum capacitors are 16volt rating, not a voltage problem there.

Minimum and maximum DC inputs according to the GV1 CCT Diagrams (not the Manual) is between 4volt and 7volt.

The limiting factor for the voltage input to the GV1 is the 450 milliwatt maximum dissapation factor of the 5 volt regulator.

Exceed the 7 volts DC input at your own risc !!! as the maximum 450 milliwatts of the regulator COULD be exceeded and cause it to fail !!!

The 2S LiFe battery pack is definately preferable over 2S liPO and there should not be a problem. But please keep in mind what Dr Ben mentioned!

Excellent reply BossieB. I once pointed out to Jim Oddino that his Jaccio regulators could not dissipate the heat through the tab (1.5 Watts in open air at room temp) with digital servos especially since the whole thing was heat shrinked.

Probably the same analysis applies to RX and TX regulators ! But people got to have those LiPo's.
