I bought a new battery for my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro running El Capitan.

The online video states I should:

1. Replace the battery
2. Charge the battery overnight
3. Turn the energy saver sliders all the way to the right/Never and disable/un-click the energy saving features.
4. Run the battery all the way down until it shuts off
5. Charge the battery at least 4 hours

After this process is complete the battery is calibrated/conditioned.

The battery that I purchased warns against running it all the down in the beginning to prevent damage. They recommend running the battery down no lower than 3%. So I have two conflicting instructions.

The online video is from a reputable source, or so it seems. But as we know with our hobby batteries we don't run them all the down to prevent damage. I'm more inclined to follow the battery manufacturers recommendations.

So what should I follow and will the energy saving features be calibrated correctly afterwards? Also will I get max performance out of my battery if I only run it down to 3%?

Thanks,

Jeff

I dont see why it would be any different than conditioning a flight pack before use. Of course I'll defer to any experts that show up. But I suspect simply cycling it 3 or 4 times should be sufficient. And just to be safe I wouldnt discharge it past 50% for at least the first 5 cycles.

I don't know if "running it all the way down until it shuts off" really takes it down to 0 voltage. I suspect there is a LV protective mechanism built into the Mac.

Going down till it turns off by itself does not take it to zero voltage. Batteries would be ruined left and right if it was allowed to do that. You'll be fine to let it run down.
