Used helicopter shipping cost?
I wanted to ship a used heli airframe intact, the UPS store wanted around $200 to ship, mainly due to box size.

How much does typical shipping cost and how much are people breaking down the heli's for shipping?

The UPS store is the probably the most expensive option for shipping. You are paying for the service of them boxing it up. And that doesn't mean they'll do a great job at packaging either. Their hours aren't that great and close before I can get off work.

I find FedEx to be cheaper and I can drop packages off at the FedEx-Kinko's store up until 11pm most days of the week. I setup an online account and print my labels online.

Buy boxes from Home Depot or Lowe's. Right now Lowe's seems to have better boxes around here. Maybe the local Office Max or again FedEx-Kinko's for boxes. Boxing tape and bubble wrap will be additional costs.

The USPS is an option to, but it's not convenient for me to stop by the post office and stand in line. And they have size limits.

Generally shipping runs about $35. The farther you ship, the more it costs.

Also prices have gone up the last year or so. I'm always surprised when I get a shipping quote these days.

Take the tail-boom off, landing gear off to limit height, pack some parts or light items in canopy. Build your own box and use lots of packing peanuts and bubble wrap. Put the boom diagonally in the bottom of the box and then put the airframe in, this should limit the size of the box.

I've found that it still costs about 60 bucks to ship.
To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

This is the price and box size used to ship a 700 size airframe with blades I received recently from Groveport, OH to Denver, CO. Took about a week.

Still buyin' and flyin' then crashing and cryin'

My most recent shipping (around Mar) was a complete MA Stratus with all electronics, blades, engine, etc. It was $46 via USPS. That was from Calif to New Hampshire - insured.

Some things to know - don't use UPS or FedEx; way too spendy. Use USPS Parcel Service; tell the PO guy, "cheapest way".

Disassemble the heli to use the smallest possible box which will allow adequate protection. Make sure the buyer knows/agrees to you disassembling; if not negotiate a new selling price. As a minimum separate from the mechanics the boom, rotor head/main shaft, engine muffler and landing gear. Size makes the biggest difference in shipping cost; not weight. Put all small parts in a big baggie just in case the box gets a hole poked through it. Consider putting long stuff (boom, blades, etc) in a separate box. Make your own box if necessary to get the smallest size box. You will have to do the packing yourself; if you want the shipper to do the packing standby to be financing the shipper's next kid through college. If you don't know how, learn to use the most appropriate packing materials to get the heli from point A to B without damage (peanuts, bubble wrap, air bags - I save all this stuff from packages shipped to me). Use lotsa packing tape on the outside of the box - all corners and edges in addition to the opening slot. The heli arriving broken from shipping will cause both you and the buyer nothing but grief.
The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

Appreciate the advice!
Thanks guys. Was blindsided by shipping, but I'll break it down to a smaller box and go from there, and USPS!
