There Is ? ? All too often it's not evident.

A personal example,
I was driving on the freeway and move into the left lane and there about 1.5 seconds in front of me (a comfortable following distance), I find a motorcycle cop. After about 5 seconds he finally notices me, gets startled and swerves and jogs a bit and then moves to the next lane. He gets behind me and turns on his lights. He gives me a ticket for "following too close".

I fight it in court and the cop decides not to show up. The case gets dismissed. - - - sometimes reason prevails.

It's a shame the knee-jerk reaction is to issue a ticket.

Is that a qualified psychological response ?
I get it now you don't like cops. Hope ya never need one. So I'm guessing ever encounter you've had with Law Enforcement they are the criminal and your the saint.............. I get it now.

And you show the typical response of someone that thinks "if you're not on my side, you're against me".

If you think that's a good defense of your position, you need more than my sympathies. (and some help in passing that psychological screening)

1.5 seconds? That is too close . . . 3 second rule is typically considered a minimum, and considering that he could stop a lot shorter than you, you definitely were putting him at risk. Based on what you wrote, I'm with the cop on this one - tailgating is one of the stupidest and totally unneccessary driving gaffs out there!

The next time you are popping your mouth of at a cop and he "decides" and "finds" cocaine in "your possession", let me know how that works out for you.

It's been done. Very easy to do.

And there's also been cops put in jail for long terms for that kind of behavior. Ask them how that worked out for them.

No, 3 seconds is not the rule. . . unless you're 90
3 seconds at 70 mph is 308 ft. That's over 100 yards.

Next time you're on the freeway tell me what "normal" spacing is.
3 seconds in normal traffic is called "obstructing traffic" when people are piled up behind you.

Another fine example of law enforcement,
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/so...olTK?li=BBnbfcL

Some cops are just too stupid to realize that they have no power unless citizens give them the power and if they abuse that power, they will have trouble in their face.

Happens all the time. Rarely get caught. Easy to do. Have had this discussion with law enforcement folks that I've known over the years.

Bottom line is THEY have the upper hand.

Yeah, it is http://www.driversedguru.com/drivin...-distance-rule/

And safe spacing does not change speed, contrary to the fantasies of the tailgaters . . . It's a matter of reaction time, variability in braking capability, etc. and 3 seconds is pretty marginal on other than dry roads as it is . . . It also gives a buffer when some dimwit cuts you off, and appears to be pretty universally taught . . . new driver classes, defensive driving classes, licensing test handbooks, etc. Do as you will, but arguing published recommendations and norms is pretty pointless . . .

Note also that reaction times are typically seen as .7 to 3 seconds, with 1.5 seconds as a norm often used in acccident analysis.1.5 seconds behind a motorcycle that can massively outbrake you has you in contact by the time you can react, and atop the bike if he brakes hard . . . thus decellerating faster that your vehicle is capable of.

Friends don't let friends become electrotarded . . . .

I don't understand why you are defending a motorcyclist that brakes hard indiscriminately or side against a driver that looks in front of the vehicle in front of the one in front of them, like two or three vehicles ahead. If you're not aware of anything more than only the vehicle immediately in front of you then you don't belong on the road.

Cite a government published example and I might give you some credibility.

As I said, 1.5 seconds is comfortable for me. Maybe that's not enough time for slower minds.

PS
Don't get the idea that I'm against all cops. Just the ones that screw up. I don't go out of my way to praise the ones that do the job that is expected of them. That's too much like giving all the students a gold star just for showing up . . . which is another topic. (if you have so little self respect and self motivation . . how can you expect others to have respect for you ?)

Comfortable for you, perhaps . . . Smart, legal, or safe considering the laws of physics, no. Oh, and since you appear to not know, if you rear end someone, no matter what they did, the law regards *you* as at fault, and with good reason!

Once again . . nope
I rear ended a guy once on an icy 5 lane 2-way road. Got a ticket. Took it to court. Showed that the guy braked aggressively on purpose with malice and got it dismissed. The only thing I regret is I didn't push to have him charged.

Of course you got off, like I didn't see that coming. You obviously exist in some parallel universe where your exempt from all law and guilt from your actions.

I got the other party to basically concede that he braked in front of me on purpose with the intent to cause me trouble. That's why it git dismissed.

With you in denial like that, I don't see how you can hold an intelligent conversation.

not taking sides but there is such a thing as the popular "Swoop and Squat" staged car accident...

for a while it got really popular in south Texas.., until they started asking for immigration status as part of the ticketing process on the "victim side"
