what is the best way of matching a motor with esc and battery. rule of thumb? or equation?

In my opinion, it's not an equation. First what size heli is it? What size motor,esc and battery is recommended and go from there. I don't think it's a magical formula, just go by what the manufacturer recommends and you can't go wrong. Just my 2 cents....good luck.

Electric motor is most important that esc.
Battery next...
Less important, esc.

Max current motor = max current esc * 0.8

Max current esc = nC * 0.5
Where n is time the capacity C of the lipo batt.

Example,

Max current Motor 100 amp... That means 100 * 0.8, 80 amps max current esc.

80 = nC * 0.5, suppose you need a 4500 maH lipo, C=4.5
Then 80 = n * 4.5 * 0.5 , so n= 35

Resume

For a 100 amp Max current motor, you need a 80 amp Max current esc.
For the lipo bat, you will need a 35C 4500 .
Numbers of cells according to motor and rpm.
