After converting my Lathe and Mill over to CNC over the course of a year I finally got around to writing code for cutting helical pinions for my Radikals...

took a few tries, using 7075 aluminum...but after tweeking the code (complicated due to the helix involved), now I get good results...

the blank is first cut on the CNC lathe, then the chuck is moved over to the mill to cut the gear teeth....next test gear will be made out of brass for the ultimate in smoothness and no more ate up main gear due to rough cut cheap pinions!

Very nice!

What cutter did you use on the mill for the teeth?

Its a module 1 (metric) involute gear cutter...damn things are expensive too. I could only afford to buy three out of the eight of a set. A gear hob was WAY out of my price range.

Nice work!

I can appreciate the work it has taken you to get this far - I've converted a benchtop mill to CNC. Quite the learning process if you aren't a machine builder.

Yes please - I would really like to see the video.

I would also like to make a few pinions and had a different (dumb?) idea in mind.

Gearotic2 produces code to cut gears with an end mill. That strategy was going to be my poison. I didn't know an involute cutter could produce slant gears.

I use a 4 axis cnc mill, one axis is rotational, so that's how I can generate the helix. The cutter looks just like a miniature circular saw blade. The cnc makes the process a lot more mechically simple. But the code to coordinate the cutter that is at the same angle of the helix moving along the center axis of the gear makes it possible.

Well finally added a video...I had to buy some good video editing software that would enable me to fast forward the video by 10x.
