Spektrum what else is there ?
I have used Spektrum radios for about 10 yrs but I am getting tired of having to send them in. I sent a DX7 in 3 times before I gave it away, Now 2 yrs after and being properly stored when not in use a DX8 is starting the same stick problems .

For some reason they usually need to be sent back this time of year
Which is very inconvenient.
So my choices are by another Spektrum radio as a back up or switch to Futaba seeing as they are more reasonably priced now. I can get a 10 JH with rx for the same price as a DX8 G2.

Does Futaba still have quality bearings and gymbals?
How often and where do people send there futaba radios for service ?

What Problems.
What problems do you have with the Spectrum?
I have the DX7s and futaba. Not much problems with either one. None with spectrum. The switch went bad on one of my older futaba. Then one of the pots was bad on a new futaba I got. Sent it back to repair at no cost.

The only two radios that I would buy are the new JR DMSS or Futaba FASSTest. XG14 or 14SG. If you want talking telemetry go Futaba. If you want great sticks go JR.

I had a potentiometer fail in a 9303. But it had a couple years on it. Still, the experience can make you a little gun shy. I was fortunately flying a 600 and already doing a rolling circle when it decided to start rolling the other way. But the landing also rolled . It only gave a subtle hint the flight before that something was up and I thought it was something with the V-bar.

The problems I have experienced so far with spektrum are the gimbals ? pots? going bad.
this time the left stick output is 1% and 99% if I push the stick hard enough it will travel.

With the sticks centred and watching the computer monitor using either vbar msh or skooum fbl set up software you can see the radio inputting signals up to 2% in this case on the aileron channel
with everything sitting still the model will ? "twitch" every 30 seconds or so.

I don't think this is normal

You can calibrate the pots on a DX8. I had to do it once and it has been good since.

I've a pretty exclusive FUT inventory over 30 year's old and one or two odd balls like a original DX 6. " Like 3 - Shelves full " and then a Retirement area just took em out of service. ALL still function.

Pretty rare to ever had a potentiometer problem. They ALL have LOT's of Hours on them too. Maybe one on a true mechanical slide trim pot.
Maybe a click off due to wear on the center, { Non Digital "

From aluminum case 3 AM Channels. to what is known as a AM Fiddle foot 2ch for 1/2 A's for basic sailplanes. FN's - Attack's - ect - Up to The Nice aluminum case stuff - Up to 9c's. Old YES / Reliable YES

Lot of the lower tier older stuff - maybe even the NEW, does not use bearing's in the gimbals pivot's. But a Pin that travels thru a adjacent piece of plastic to hinge on or tilt.

When they get really OLD - the plastic pivot can just give up - It's plastic and it just get's old and brittle. To put a WHOLE gimbal assembly, in is a real effort.

Hard to believe : At one time $125.00 you could purchase a Entry Level 4 ch with 4 servoes : Complete !

Also Note : FUTABA : Is a Manufacture of MANY Industrial Electronic products - Mainly machine tool electronics.

They have been VERY TRUSTWORTHY - That's everything

In all of my years of flying I have had exactly one problem with a Futaba transmitter. They fixed it free of charge with no questions asked.

I can't say anything about other manufacturers, but Futaba is practically bullet-proof.

OP. So you had to send DX7 in 3 times and now have to send in a DX8... maybe you should figure out what you are doing that could be causing the problem. This would be an unusually high failure rate on a single part.

I know two guys still using their original DX7 radios, and over a long time I have never had a problem.

One thing is that I would never use my field radio to fly the sim no matter what they say. Maybe you are just flying 10times or a 100 times more than we are flying. Everything does wear out.

Anyone thinking one radio brand is better/worse than another is probably wrong. They are all made with the same materials. So at the same price point, I would say that they are all nearly equal.

Ive used notihng but Futaba for over 20 years, and have never once had to send a radio for repair. (Attack-4, Skysport 6, 6XS, 9C, 10C, 14SG so far).

There is also JR, Airtronics and Hitec to consider. I have never known anybody to need frequent service on those either.

If using the radio causes the pots/gimbals to fail then it's the radio.
Both radio's were very well taken care of and the DX8 lives in it's case when not in use.

Maybe it's the climate here ? hot and humid in summer and freezing cold and dry in winter though I don't use my radio outside in winter.

Does jeti make a radio for 400$ ?

Sometimes manufacturers screw up. The original blue Murata pots in the 12Z and 14MZ were complete crap and only good for maybe a 100 flights. But this is old history. Futaba corrected this 10 years ago.

The pots are probably not failing. The flexible wires going to the inside gimbal pot are probably breaking. This is the catastrophic failure alluded to above. Worn pots are just dirty and jitter.

Radios vary by design AND by manufacture.

A side note: I used my cheap spectrum analyzer to check all of the transmitters at the field yesterday. This is a relative measurement.

-28 dB - JR and one Spectrum DX7
-35 dB - Futaba TM 7, two DX 8
-42 dB - one DX 9

-28 dB is 14 dB ABOVE or MORE THAN -42 dB. I was surprised.

I considered getting a Jeti but the FCC test was NOT encouraging. Also Hall Effect sticks are fine for 3D since they snap to center in the s/w but poor for pattern type flying either airplane or heli.

I would look at Weatronics or Multiplex IF I lived in the EU. But there is no importer.
