I know we all hear of the problems that are encountered when you have a contingent of airplane only club members who do not like helicopter pilots. What I would like to see in this thread is an on going series of reports of how some clubs are able to successfully mix airplanes and helicopters.

If you can take the time to share stories of successful operation of a mixed club it might help others in their club environments.

STARS club in Phoenix NY has a mix of heli, quads and planes. Heli-quad training night is on Tuesday. Plane training is on Thursday. Any other day in between you can fly what ever you want!
I have been with the club for 5 years and have never heard of an issue between Heli-Quad or planes. No one seems to have any problems.

My club consists of about 10 cranky old men who fly planes and grumble about the government, one guy who flys planes and helis who I always watched in awe since I was 12 every time he flew his heli, and myself who has flown planes only until about 3 years ago when I decided to learn rotary wing. We all get along great and their is no friction between the types of models. Most of the old plankers just sit and yak all evening anyways and are just happy to watch and be at our beautiful site. It is common for myself and the other heli pilot to bring a plane as well. I can't imagine being in a club where there was actually friction because of this.

RAMS club in the Seattle is the oldest club in Washington. We host a good mix of heli and planks and quads and all have a good time. Any differances we have are all worked out and we have FUN when we fly together. We have two areas that we fly , the large runway and field and a hover and 3d area the both helis and fomies use.Generaly helis dont fly when planks are in the air and vise versa, unless agreed on.
It works out well....it not a rule but works well.

Same with ours- helis and planes are not generally in the air at the same time. Not a rule, just an unspoken gentleman's agreement I guess.

Hell we sometimes have quad racers with spotter in the same airspace as flying helis and planks and still have no issues because everyone TALKS.

The field that I fly at, there are only two of us that flys helis, but we also fly planks along with the majority. There are times when I am flying my heli and a plank or two may take off, we have no issues, as someone said, respect and communication is the key. Only lighter days when there are only a couple of us out, we just take turns or all fly planks.
Us heli guys get treated like kings are our field, when the public shows up, that is what they want to see. The majority of our club members are retired and fly that way to. So when visitors show up, they want to see something that doesnt just fly circles.

Rarely do the plane flyers show up at our field. This could be called a successful relationship. They help us pay for keeping the field mowed.

Like others have written and I'll echo.
Communication between pilots and the use of spotters is very helpful. Also understanding aircraft operations of the other aircraft will help you for example when someone yells out dead stick that a plane has likely lost engine power and is landing immediately. Having zero understanding of what's going on around you and hovering in the middle of the runway with any aircraft is likely to ruffle others feathers.
