No matter what taxing system we put in place to replace the one we have, it will be useless unless it is placed in the constitution as an amendment including rules governing how we change it or raise it requiring a super majority to do so including applying no other taxation system to over ride the new one.

If that is not done, then politicians will simply pass laws in the dark of night to change it right back to where it is now all written in legalese that no one can possibly understand for their own benefit to get campaign donations from the lobbyists in order to stay in power. The system we have now is built into the culture of Washington, D.C. and will not be an easy thing to change at all.

In other words, we must go through the process of amending the constitution.

Best of luck with that.

Yeah. The irony is the constitution says so little about one of the most important social order concepts - who pays for government. It gave congress pretty much unlimited power of the purse. And they took it, right there in the 16th Amendment.

Funny - we Americans went nuts when simply deprived of our alcohol and overturned an amendment. But yet for 100 years we allow 50-60% of our income to be obliterated. Maybe we should forget all this flat tax stuff and just transfer all taxation to alcohol as it seems to be more important to Americans.

NONE of what is happening would be possible if people knew their power. People are sheep.

I am interested in EEngineer's comment that only 1Trillion of the 3.3-ish trillion actually comes from personal income taxes. The lion's share is comming from other sources.

We have seen quite a bit of stink-eye and angry sharp-clawed finger pointing directed at the 1%, but i have not heard a word about import tarifs... I am thinking we need to give a small nudge to help keep the jobs and the corporate taxes here.... ?

Oh how we forget history. When did income tax first begin, how much did it start at, where was it in three years. Nobody ever heard of the 1920 crash, why? But we all know about the one in 1929. Nothing is ever enough for the government, I suggest you do a little research on our past before you talk about what is a fair share and what is enough. Unfortunately taxes and ignorance tend to go hand in hand.

Actually, the lions share of federal tax taken in comes from the high salary brackets and the rich.

And they are still accused of not paying their "fair share"

taxing everyone at the same dollar value
No one here advocated that.

You threw that out as a straw argument.

People would be taxed at the same PERCENTAGE....and you knew that.

Stir that pot....LOL

Seems like the 2015 estimate is 1.4T....so I was a little low...

http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxf...t.cfm?Docid=203

Corporate taxes are simply passed on to all consumers....but are a slick way for the snakes in congress to steal our wealth in order to buy votes...as well as to exploit class envy.

Rather like what communists have always done.

By reducing the corp. tax rate....less thievery would occur....and people would be investing their money in US corps.....resulting in a boom in our lagging economy.

And....

When one is provided with a "free" education....that is taxpayer funded(by the 50% that actually pay any net tax".....thru the age of 18....

Well, that should be an incentive to NOT phuck off in school, but rather to actually pay attention and learn something.

FWIW

I don't see that working. Sorry.
Aaron... seriously, you have to read the book to get the system. I was skeptical myself until I read the book. Easy to find. It was on the bestseller list for quite a while back in the mid 2000's.
It's actually fairly simple. Softback was like 7 bucks. Give it a shot and see what you think....I try everyday to open somebody's eyes to it.....

Here are a few things I don't think are fair..

-- I don't think it is fair that democracy has come to mean that I vote you pay my taxes. If this is allowed to continue, a politician or political party could be elected by simply telling 51% of the people your taxes will be paid by the other 49%.

-- I don't think it is fair that people are free to vote that unemployment pays as much or more than minimum wage. It should NEVER come to pass that working pays less than not working.

-- I don't believe it is fair that people should be able to get a federal tax "refund" when they never paid into the system. That is tantamount to stealing.

-- I don't think it is fair that, as a person that is paid by a company, every last dime a make is taxed at something approaching 40% while cash only or self employed individuals are allowed to tell the federal government what they'd like taxed.

-- I don't think it is fair that if you work to build something in America you are taxed at a much higher rate than if you just "invest" in America. If you make $200,000 building homes you will pay MUCH higher taxes than if you make $200,000 flipping homes. If you work for an airline you should pay the same rate in taxes whether you make your money throwing bags or in gifted stock options.

-- I don't think it is fair that in a society founded on every man is created equal, we have a progressive tax system. If everyone is equal, why are you taking my money and giving it to other people? A progressive tax is by definition NOT fair or equal.

-- I don't think it is fair that the IRS is aggressively going after individual tax payers that have held money in off shore banks without reporting those funds for taxation, while Apple is free to claim its income was earned under a shell company in Ireland and therefore nontaxable. If you make money in America, individual or corporate, you should pay taxes in America.

Should I go on with the inequities of our current taxation system? The list is LONG.

Our tax system is truly messed up and needs fixing.

But, the above is simply not true. For example. Apple has stores all over the USA selling their products retail. Those stores are paying the same taxes that any other retailer is paying based on their net profit margins.

Apple also does all their manufacturing overseas. They ship those products here sold to the wholesalers that market them to retailers. Yes, it's a complex game of money shifting. But, legal as can be.

The profits earned with overseas manufacturing is kept overseas. Apple cannot bring that money back into the USA without paying a 35% tax on it to our government. They have already paid a tax on those profits to the country of manufacture in most cases. So, that money stays overseas to procure and/or build more manufacturing or gets invested other ways in foreign investments without ever returning to the good old USA.

Now, all that money that gets taxed at 35% if returned to the USA could be taxed at say 5%. It's estimated to be in the trillions. If it is returned to the USA under a more reasonable rate, then does it not make sense that it is better to have that money invested here instead of overseas to create more taxable income and we would be better off by not taxing it at 35% and never seeing it at all?

Liberty once lost, is lost forever.
