Well I have a trex 600n with a hyper 50 sxh and it is governed by a multigov. This engine does not have a mid needle. I really felt like I got it tuned pretty good. Maybe a little on the rich side but it idled great and ran with no problems. The other day I had starting problems. Basically it's running rich on the low end. I am trying to figure out why it would run rich if I didn't touch anything. Could it be that something broke inside the carb. The outside temp in Miami did drop a little but only by 10 degrees.

Try a new glo plug, or if the engine is new it may need to be leaned a little.

first question, is this the 60L carb ??

so it's running rich at idle, is that a problem, does it want to stall as you increase the throttle for spooling up ??

well the colder the air the more dense the air the more fuel you need

way back a few people including myself have reported on RR finding bits of white plastic inside their carb from manufacturing jigs when OS put the carb together

BTW, what plug are you using ??, I had a rich idling problem for a long time, at idle mine ran so rich the engine would stall as I increased the throttle to spool up, yet if I leaned the idle screw just a tiny bit it would go way lean, I tried 3 different tuned mufflers, and different fuels, and 2 different carbs (the 60L and 60B 3 needle) still it stalled,, in the end I found I simply needed a hotter plug, (OS #7) problem solved instantly

if you have the old 40E carb remove it from the engine and put it on an anvil and hit a good 15 or 35 times with a 20 pound hammer, at best save it for a plane and get on RR and buy a used 60L or better yet a 3 needle carb

There are pages and pages WRITTEN about WHY you will run THIS engine rich on the low or high end.

In one sentence, the stock needles are not linear (perfect) especially when running 30% nitro.

Modifying the main needle helps. Other alternatives are to change the cat-eye opening.

My way to getting around the problem was to cut the main needle a bit, and changing the transfer ports.

Keep in mind I have been reworking engines for quite some time.

The 3 needle carb of the OS55 is way better, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO TUNE AN ENGINE.

the original cat-eye mod (back in 2003) was for the 40E carb when it would start running lean in flight after the fuel in the tank ran low, some people found after they did the mod they could run their idle screw and their high needle leaner

maybe worn out?
How much run time? the top end could need some attention; inconsistent runs can indicate wear; might just need a ring..or a rebuild.

I do a great decending funnel!

You say it's not the plug but did you actually try a new one?
