Hello

Has anybody had the experience of their XBus Rx running hot.

I have a JR RG731BX running XBus into a VBar powered with a 2s3800 LiPo and it seems to be running quite hot. It also smells hot.

Are you powering the RX through the VBar or the VBar through the RX ?
Are you wrapping the RX in foam ? All new digital RX's draw a lot.

I'm currently powering the Rx from the VBar. The Rx is mounted alone on the tray held with two pads of 3m tape, one at each end. This allows airflow above and below the Rx.

Do you have an IR temp gun to check how hot it really is ? Sure it is not something else that is smelling ?

No I don't have a temp gun. I will split the power supply between the Rx and the VBar and see if that helps.

This heating and smelling is indoors and not out in the sun ?

There was a problem with some receivers under clear canopies or windshields.

Everything is working fine except for the hot smelly receiver ? I have the 712, 831 and 1131 RX's and they do run warm to the touch. But I run them on 6.6 volt LiFe. Of course you want to run the RX on the full voltage so that the voltage telemetry is useful. It's rated for 8.5 volts!

It's just running on the bench without the canopy at this stage. It is otherwise working perfectly.

i know the linear chip get hott to the touch under loads but should dissipate fairly quickly as it is heat sunk to the ground plane.(pretty sure i recall one of the utube vids going through the xg8 n 831 saying the rxs had linear power supplies) I wondering what kinda loads ur stressing it with. Im fairly sure your not binding any of the servos Fairly easy to stick a meter inline and see what amps your pulling ? Im curious to see what chip set it is causing the heat ? wondering if its one of the ti wifi chips? any chance you want to remove the case and stick a thermo couple on the heat source or ir temps it. Im running my mr25 off xbus via 731bx no heat as of yet but only powered it up to set parameters..

I know you say its working but heat while on the bench may be a indicator or problem. I would send it in for a diagnosis and you dont want it to take out a heli ?? Esp if your running xbus as the load should be on the Vbar Imho ??

I have around 20 RG731BX's in service in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

I did notice a small amount of heat from one or two of them, but nothing extraordinary. Almost all of them are running at 6 volts or less. The one in the Velos is running at 7.4 volts.

I have changed the power lead locations now to have one to the Vbar and one to the rx. I have also added a jumper lead between the two to just add a bit more copper connection between units.

All seems pretty normal now.
