18SZ Users? Question before I buy one
How good is the color screen in the sunlight. I want to make sure this model has a good visible screen like the 14SG.

Can someone give me some feedback on how good it is?

Programmed one today in full sun. It's pretty darn good.

Do you think its worth the upgrade from the 14SG? Things like having an internal speaker for telemetry and FASST compatibility would be nice but is there more benefits?Go Fly

Just fine!
I've been using it in the sun for the last few weeks with no problems at all!

To answer if its worth the upgrade? To me the programing ease and functionality is awesome, but what makes it worth it in additional to the obvious features are the super high quality gimbals!

I'll 2nd everything above, I have a 14sg and upgraded to an 18sz and couldn't be happier. I have had no issues programming it in any conditions, and the stick feel is second to none.

The 18SZ has superior gimbals, greater programming ability, and easier (IMO) user interface as a function of its touch screen. I'd be stunned if you were not well pleased with your upgrade to this radio.

I also upgraded from the 14SG, the touch screen, gimbals and programming is awesome on the 18SZ.

I just hope that Futaba includes the model select feature on power-on that we had on the 14SG on a future firmware update.

I also upgraded from the 14SG. I just hope that they do a fix for the GPS module. When you want it to speak the speed it won't do it. I just keeps saying Miles Per Hour but it doesn't tell you the speed. It displays on the screen ok so someone standing next to you can tell you what the screen says. To dangerous to look yourself.

Still love the radio.

That's what buddies are for.

I have a similar issue with the 14's alerts. The beeps are so low on volume its hard to hear. I need to rely on the vibration alerts or look at the transmitter quickly to see time remaining.

I also hope they fix the voice alerts so the voice timer can be changed to time remaining not time flown. On the 14 the timers count down but the voice counts up.

I don't think the 18sz will tell you the time up or down thru it's built in speaker. If it will please let me know how to set that up.Richard Wilabee

I agree. Super nice feature of the 14SG. Really hope they integrate that into the 18SZ soon.

I upgraded from the 14SG. The 18SZ has over exceeded my expectations. WELL worth the price of admission.

no lock screen
Press and hold the Home key to lock screen. Press and hold again to unlock.

The only feature missing from the 14SG that I can tell is the model select feature.

I think the model select on boot up screen is what folks are referring to as "missing" on the 18sz.
For me, when I was using FASST Rx like the 6203 or 6303s, the model select on initial tx boot was important, as if you had the wrong model selected, it would still link to a Rx that had previously been linked to that tx. This actually caused a crash for me once. Learned a hard lesson.
However, now that I'm using the FASSTEST Rx protocol with sbus2 that requires linking to specific Rx per model, I don't see the model set on boot up to be as big an issue. Also with the 18sz, changing models with the touch screen is so much easier.

Sorry but selecting the wrong model with FASSTest protocol it will still make you crash just as if it was fasst, the only think that is not going to work with the wrong model is telemetry.

The model select feature (user selectable) makes you stop and look at that model list and select a model, it will not transmit until you select one.

coming from a 14sg into a 18MZ and now settled into a 18SZ. I love the SZ. its everything I wanted from both of my last radios. I loved the SG but hated the touch dial as my fingers were always too dry to work it. love the gimbles and touch of the MZ. the SZ feels better in my hands. just been very pleased with it. I would like the model name bigger on the screen and the model select on fire up that the Sg had but those have been requested to futaba by reps so now its just want to see what happens

"but those have been requested to futaba by reps so now its just want to see what happens"

Lets hope that Futaba continues to support upgrades to the 18SZ in the future and add the features requested. The 14 has not had any upgrade for a very long time now. Their normal pattern is to make 1 or 2 firmware changes and then move on to the next model.

Model select
DougV, I stand corrected sir. Don't know how I drew that conclusion about FASSTEST Rx not cross linking to other models. But I thought I tried that before and it wouldn't link. I just tried it again and it did. Thanks for pointing that out!
