6th Annual Huntsville Heli Flyers Championships - MAY 20-22, 2016
HHF invites you to join us for our 6th Annual Huntsville Heli Flyers Championships on May 20-22nd, in Huntsville, AL.

AMA sanctioned event for Sportsman, Advanced, and Expert classes and FAI F3C. All are welcome. If just mildly interested in contest flying, pack up a model and come join us. This is a very low pressure event with good veteran attendance, so you're bound to learn something.

Entry fee includes box lunch on Saturday. Criticism from the peanut gallery is free all weekend long.

The field will be reserved for practice on Friday. Contest rounds will be flown on Saturday and conclude early on Sunday.

Visit our club website for field location:
http://www.huntsvilleheliflyers.org

Hotel information upon request. Updates will be posted here.

F3N?
F3N pilots,

If there's sufficient interest (meaning at least 3 pilots), I'm willing to host F3N as well. Please let me know if you plan to attend.

For reference, the F3N rules can be found at the FAI website:

I sent an email about adding an F3N component. In case that did not go through, I would be interested.

Sportsman Comp
I have never flown a competition before with a Heli and I'm thinking about coming and flying Sportsman. I've setup my 770 for precision hovering and mild aerobatics.(previously setup for a much more aggressive 3D setup.

I have 2 questions,

1. Since it is a flybarless Heli I have a FBL unit installed Vbar.(why do the rules say tail gyro only?)

2. My Heli is setup on 14S and I don't have a 12S setup. Can I use my 14S setup?

If I have fun with this I may sell the 770 and go Urukay. I put in 8 flights hovering today.

Wes,

IIRC years ago the rules required no flight stabilization, ie a flybar model only. No mention currently of that for F3C or F3N in the document linked that I can find. Where did you read that? Page 9 for F3C and page 26 for F3N give model requirements.

Both classes stipulate 51 volts max unloaded so that limits you to 12S.

F3C has a max rotor swept area of 250 square decimeters. To exceed this your rotor span would have to above about 1.8 meters. F3N has no max swept rotor area. So in either case you are good with a 770.

Max weight for both classes is 6.5 Kilograms or about 14.3 pounds.

You'd have to ask the event CD if you could compete on 14S on a recreational basis. IOW's no official score. I suspect Dan is really looking to get a few people interested in competing so would be flexible?

Officially the rule is as such for FBL in F3C from section 5.4.3(d).
http://www.fai.org/downloads/ciam/S...elicopters_2016
"The use of pre-programmed flight manoeuvres is forbidden. The use of automatic position (latitude and longitude) locking devices and altitude locking devices, whether with external references or not, are forbidden."
Basically FBL is allowed. Self level and bailout are not.

RE: Sportsman Comp
Wes,

Good to hear you're enjoying the precision side of the hobby! Attending a local contest is a great next step.

I'm all for "run what you brung" at my contests. I encourage folks to just come out and give it a try, equipment doesn't matter, especially these days. We've had guys in the past do very VERY well 500-size machines simply because that's what they had flying well at the time. Much more important to fly something you're comfortable with. If you like your 770 on 14S, by all means bring it!

As Steve mentioned, if you start thinking about the Nats this year, per the rules you would be limited to 12S at that event.

See everyone soon! F3C for me, but if there is enough interest to have the 3D side count me in for F3N.

Looking forward to the F3N side if the weather holds up and there are enough people!

Is there a schedule, specifically for the F3N portion? Will that take place on Friday so it does not interfere with F3C?

Schedule
We do still plan to host F3N. Rounds will be flown Sat/Sun right along with AMA/FAI. Friday is just a practice day.

As far as weather... We'll see. A week away is still a little early to trust the weather casters. Fingers crossed for no rain!
