spit pack v/s multiple cells in series
What is the benifit of a split cell pack ? For instance a 6s pack wired in series straight across and a 6s pack with 4 cells in series with the remaining 2 cells in series wired separate from the 4 such as thunderpower magna line? Why is this done on some lipo brands?

They do it to get around shipping regulations....

However, in testing it has been shown that these links are generally made from wire that is too small and they desolder themselves.

When split packs are wired, each cell is either soldered by the metal tabs together not small gauge wire. The balance wires are the smallest in the pack but are only used to balance in most applications. Split cell packs join 4 cell's together then solder one positive power wire and one negative, using 10 to 8 gauge wire, the remaining two cells are again joined in series with a second power wire at the positive terminal and at the negative terminal with balance leads It is then that they are conjoined in series to create 24 volts. My question is what is the benifit by doing this rather than just 6 cells in series with one pos. and one neg power lead as most manufacturers do.

I just told you and you even quoted me...

They do it to get around shipping regulations.

Also, several companies including TP, have used wire as small as 12awg on their 5000mah packs which desolder themselves very quickly at 20-30C loads.

So in reality there is no upside or increased longevity by doing so . May I ask in what way does that get around shipping regulations?"R.I.P Roman" Citizen 0094 in the Nation

Because shipping regulations limit pack size to 100 watt-hours (Wh). A 6s 5000mAh pack is just over the 100Wh limit. By splitting the pack each individual pack meets the 100Wh shipping requirement.

I guess you spit on them when then get hot
or maybe spit on the plug before connecting

I'm still trying to figure out what a SPIT pack is.
maybe some definitions first:

a battery is defined as a group of cells fixed together.
a cell is a single component of a battery.

The U.S. now has regulations in place that restrict cells larger than 20Wh and batteries larger than 100Wh from being shipped in regular mail.

See section 135.63 of the postal code.

A 6s 5000mah pack is too large to ship in the U.S. now, due to these regulations. Watt hours is calculated by: cell voltage time capacity.

A single 5000mah cell = 3.7v * 5ah = 18.5Wh...OK to ship
But, a 6s 5000 pack = 111Wh....NOT ok to ship

To get around this, they "split the pack" in to two smaller batteries. It is still 6 cells shrink wrapped together with a common large-gauge red and black wire to be used as a single connector to yield a 6s 5000 pack. But, there's a disconnect wire in the middle of the 6s series, thus making it two 3s packs by the government's definition of a battery.

Insofar as the government is concerned they are shipping 2 3s 5000 packs, each with a 55.5Wh rating.
if it ain't broke, break it.

I have not seen one of these "spit" packs.
Are they shipped with the two "halfs" disconnected and the user connects them ?
If they were connected during shipment, would they not be considered a single pack ?

For clarification, I found this
https://www.ups.com/media/news/en/c...regulations.pdf

and this,
https://www.unzco.com/infosource/wh...r%20HM-224F.pdf

and this,
https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-20.../2015-03500.pdf

and this,
https://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo...ent-2015-en.pdf

Leave it to the government to complicate the crap out of anything and everything.

Thunderpower, Hyperion, two manufacturers that do this.

So . . . does the user have to connect the two halves ? ?
. . . or are they shipped that way ? ?

Yes, the user connects the two halves together. All I have seen come with bullet connectors installed. You just need to connect the bullet connectors.

My Revolectrix 6s 5000mAh batteries are split packs (> 100Wh limit) while my Revolectrix 6s 4400mAh are not split packs (< 100Wh).
