I have used (and still use for my Bind-N-Fly models) the 12X since it became available. It has proven to be an extremely reliable radio for all these years (around 10 now?).

I upgraded to the 28X in March of last year. Even though the stick assemblies on the 12X were the best I have flown, up until the advent of the XG14, the sticks on the 28X blow them (and the sticks on anything else I have examined) both away).

The programming methodology is quite a bit different (I did have a bit of a learning curve to get used to the Android programming as it is quite different)but, ultimately, even more intuitive. Some of the things, such as cyclic to throttle mixing, are easier to work with on the 28 than the 12. Making changes in the field (gyro settings, expo, endpoints, throttle curves, etc.) is easier on the 28X than the 12X, IMHO.

There is a large degree of integration with the 28X and the JR TAGS-Mini FBL unit (this also exist on the other new JR radios, but is, IMHO, easier to access on the 28X).

Response/feel on the 28X is much better, IMHO, than that of the 12X-I assume that part of this is the greater resolution on the 28X and part the fact that channel information for those channels primarily used for flight control are sent simultaneously with DMSS vs. the previous protocol. The sticks help in this regard as well. Machines that I have owned for years feel/respond better, IMHO, with just the upgrade to the radio and receiver and nothing else. This gets even better on those FBL units that allow the use of an X-Bus connection between the receiver and FBL unit.

Upgrades are downloadable to a card, which is an advantage over the 12X (having to send it in to be upgraded). JR is sending upgrades out somewhat regularly, so the system is always current. One can also share files (I have emailed 28X files to several people) to compare notes.

The 28X is considerably heavier than the 12X, moreso with the second battery installed (I would definitely recommend this). The 28Xcase has an aluminum frame inside, and feels just as rigid as its magnesium cased predecessor.

The default switch positions are different than those on the 12X. It is a simple matter to reprogram them to new locations. I took the recommendation of several JR Americas Team Members and made a template for helicopters and for airplanes. This makes it a very simple matter to add new machines and keep the basic things like switch positions exactly where you want them.

Upgrading to the 28X/JR DMSS has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in the hobby.

I am a JR Americas Team Pilot and have been flying JR radios since approximately 1982.

I am like he said above. Love ours and wouldn't go to anything else. Granted my kid and I are team pilots but I am the kind of person that if I didn't like it I would tell you. So far I can come up with anything I don't likeTeam Jr

Hey buddy.

I've gone from a DSX12 to the 28x and love it. Unlike the US I was stuck on DSM2 only with my UK spec set, so the jump to DMSS was more noticeable perhaps regarding the control resolution gains.
I've always brought myself JR's high end transmitter when they have been released, starting from the PCM10S and have not had a bad experience with any of them.

I'm a fan of the larger cased transmitters, I like to be able to sit my middle finger between the top shoulder mounted buttons so the spacing here is critical for me and the 28X fits nice.

As above the integration with Android is great, as an avid Android phone user working my way around the Android part was easy. I've also installed a couple of Android apps on the system to, the Vbar app for example is on there but with no BT is useless.

I am a sponsored pilot (RC 360 Technologies (Align distributer UK) and Midland Helicopters) but not a JR sponsored pilot.

It would be nice to hear from any pilots that aren't sponsored or who have a vested interest in selling it.

I haven't seen anyone with this radio other than team members. It's very expensive for what you get. I've been flying JR since 1980 and have always had their top of the line since the advent of the PCM 9. The 28X seems to be very capable, but the price/performance ratio is a little off especially when you compare with Futaba's new 18 or the Graupner MX/MC radios.

Admittedly, the Graupner isn't going to match build wise, but it does match or exceed in the software and telemetry areas.

I wonder if JR will release a more affordable radio that is based on the 28X similar to what Futaba have done.

Another radio that is picking up speed is the Jeti - outstanding build quality but at well under $900 for the DS-14.

I want to stay JR - but not at the $2700 price.

Can you explain what is off price performance wise from the 18mz and graupner. Now I don't know much about graupner but as far as the 18mz about all it has more is the camera but it also lists at about 4 to 5 hundred bucks more.Team Jr

I have the 28x and the 18MZ, both really high quality.
The 28x is heavier, and the build quality is slightly better, but JR still can't beat the functionality of the 18MZ.

If you are A JR freak, the 28x is a very worthy successor to the 12X, as long as you are prepared to change all of your Rx's.

No sponsorship here, so have no allegence.

Everyone says the functionality is better with the Futaba. Could someone explain what Futaba can do that JR can't. So far I have found only the camera. Can you explain what it can do?Team Jr

I'm kind of in the same boat as the OP... I like the 28x but my 12x is doing everything I need it to do. It's almost 10 years old now.

If i did order one I would need around 6 rx's to go with it and then its a little pricey.

I would be sold if it had Blue tooth and wifi capability's. similar most all android phones. or even just incorporating most the grown up features found in most everyday devices.

my question is can it be updated to have that functionality if it comes about soon?

It does have wifi. No other radio that I know of unless I missed it has Bluetooth. Now if a person could find a Bluetooth dongle that sends and receives you could add a Bluetooth program and have it. As far as grown up features exactly what are you talking about? It has internet capability through wifi so you can search or watch anything on the internet you want. I do know they are updating at a quick pace and a lot more is coming. I just don't know what is meant by grown up features nor that the functionality isn't there. If there is something that is really needed I can suggest it but I can't read minds. Those two are pretty broad. Give me some ideasTeam Jr

cool... nice to know its wifi capable. that's nice

can it be used to control a wifi module? say with a robotic arm or is it just for download/updates.

also its been kind of unclear to me, what did they do with the switch assignment. I mean I get you can move them around manually but can you also assign any switch with function/mix

can the screen be used for an fvp setup?

this is more of a longevity question but hows the finish? do you think the rubberized coating will hold up around a nitro machine.

if i dreamed up a great TX it would be kind of a combination of the osrc and or with JR quality.

Well the finish is second to none. There is nothing out there that fit and finish is better. Gimbals there are none better. As far the robotic arm that I couldn't answer I am not into that or even know how to set one up

As far as switch assignment it is so easy to assign a switch to do anything. It is stupidly easy. I think you can move them also. That I have not done as they are how I like them

XBUS usage
Would like to trade notes on using HV,standard servo's, and lights in this configuration. I am thinking g step downs are needed but hoping the harnesses take care of all this.

Your The First!!

Evan, you are going to be the first using this many channels in a scale heli.
So, I think, as you get going, and have specific questions, you will do a lot better getting info.., anything else will just get you mixed up..,
So, hang in there and know that the person you contacted at JRA will be there, along with an entire team..,
Don't get ahead of yourself!!

Oh, and the NX servos will do the job for you.. they are designed for xbus operation!!

Thanks!!!
Well the plan is A: Get her back up in the air, and dial her in. I really don't want to get too far along with the current system only knowing I will have to re-do it all over.

So to be perfectly honest, I can get her more than going with the radio and the RG812BPX. My imagination always seems to get me out there(first), but with the team I have in my corner this is going to just be plain FUN!!!
