Can drone racing become as big as eSports?
http://www.engadget.com/2016/01/27/...big-as-esports/
There will be some who are quick to call this the next Battlebots. Or slot car racing for the connected generation, but then the online critics have a history of not taking things seriously, until, of course, the money starts to flow. The sport's challenge is to follow gaming's lead, and secure itself some serious prize money. Drone Worlds is offering a $200,000 total kitty for its October Championships in Hawaii. If the DRL can reach similar numbers on a regular basis, no amount of nay-saying will matter.
In the sixties I got bored of slot cars.

any contradiction?
Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) is the distance at which the pilot is able to maintain visual contact with the aircraft and determine its orientation and attitude without enhancements other than corrective lenses.

It can, but I dont see it getting super popular... if you put money into the winning positions, guaranteed it would get more traction...then display each of the racers onboard video for the spectators to see...

What makes any sport popular is spectator interest and involvement.
showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

No contradictions as far as I can tell.

The key words here are "able" which AFAIK isn't the same as "has/have to". Someone may be able to do something but doesn't necessarily have to.

There is a ton of money pouring into this aspect of the sport and if it is done in an indoor arena, the FAA is SOL.

I thought IRCHA and AMA were 2 DIFFERENT organizations that are mutually exclusive?

So no contradiction, right?

how about see & avoid clause
9.Visual Line of Sight is required by the Safety Code. It means that visual contact with the aircraft must be maintained without enhancement other than by corrective lenses prescribed for the model aircraft pilot. All RC flying must remain clear of clouds smoke or any other obstruction to the line of sight.

Empty stadiums, hot girls paid to hang with nerds (who have not received the memo about not being cool) that stare at tiny screens....yep this is awesome...lol

I just don't think it is a spectator sport. At least with Nascar the cars are big enough to see from the stands. I think you have some business people with pie in the sky dreams about getting rich by setting up these racing leagues. Remember, most of these guys are not the guys most of us hang with.

We go to the field to look up at the sky, they go to the field to stare at their crotch.

I don't know about that, I think it is mostly a participant sport for the
flyers (goggleists). I tried to watch some of it at IRCHA and just didn't
see much.......little tiny dots shooting around just above the ground.

Maybe just me and my eyes....
