Squeak from tail drive?
Hi friends, I've read lots of horror stories on these plastic tail umbrella gears being junk and failing. Were almost ready for a maiden test and I noticed the tail is very smooth but after I run it up, blades off, it seems to start squeaking. Pretty sure its coming from the metal spur gear. Maybe some dry lube would help or is this just something that happens?

It's basically a Align 600. The only metal gear is the spur gear, bronze color you see in the picture. It's being driven by a stock Align autorotation gear.Gravity's a bitch ant it?

I would suggest:

For quick fix:
- spray some silicone librication in the cap and use a Q-tip to put it on the top and bottom of belt.
- you can get it any any hardware store
- the silicone will preserve the belt and reduce static build up
- if it still squeaks ... Check for
Belt tension
Upper and lower bearing of vertical hear next to auto rotation gear

If all checks out, the belt is deteriorating and time to replace it. Lost its elasticity

Okay now since I have the facts. I have some information that can help you with that problem. First is the problem is mainly the 45 degree raised tail gearbox not the metal gear that you showed in the pic. If you're using the original tail boom and torque tube the problem is in the gearbox.after building 20 of the RCA superscale Helicopter I have found where the problem lies.Robin did not realize that they had molded the nipple that tail boom into the gearbox too far forward so when u install the boom and tail case that the torque tube would push the front and rear forward gears that would cog with the umbrella gear out and would cause premature wear of the plastic gears and also cause loud noise in the gear for rubbing to hard to each other as they wear out. The easiest way to fix the problem is take ur torque tube out and remove one of the tube cross knuckle at the end of the tube and cut off 3mm of the tube, then reinstall the knuckle back on the tube. And install back into the boom. After doing that make sure that the front and rear gear are pushed flushed down so that the gear cogging at the front and rear are smooth and quite. But the gearbox would make the torque tube alittle too long and would pop the gears outward and that's why ppl have Had so many tail failures. For example my EC145 uses the same setup and I only have metal gears in the gearbox but useing the stock plastic gears from align and with over 620 ,flight my gears have never been replaced.
