All I know is that federal law exempts all RC hobbyists from FAA regs.
Senator James Inhofe(R-OK) sponsored this specific legislation which was duly passed into federal law.
At this time.
So the FAA's ruling is not the law. The FAA cannot pass any "laws".
With all due respect.
At least someone gets it. Thank you very much.

It's not about the cost. It's about the government becoming big brother. The FAA registration is in direct violation of the FMRA Act of 2012, period. And what does the AMA do, they get in bed with the FAA at their members expense. The new "transportation" bill is a POS. You need to read it. It gives the FAA the Power to levy fines. They currently don't have that. It redifines model aircraft to mean AIRCRAFT, giving them the power to regulate model aircraft. It also gives the AMA some power.

I wrote the director of the AMA about the wording in the "new" transportation bill that they are working on in conjunction with the FAA. I basically got told to piss off. He didn't really care what I had to say. If you read the bill, the AMA's agenda is clear and it has nothing to do with its members.

There is nothing wrong with the FMRA ACT of 2012. It is written to keep the FAA out of the Model Aircraft industry. It doesn't need to be changed. It needs to be enforced. The AMA needs to represent us in this, but instead they are looking out for themselves by trying to write themselves into the law.

Write the AMA. Tell them to represent their members by using our dues to enforce the FMRA Act of 2012, and remove the model aircraft rider in the new transportation bill.

If this new transportation bill is passed, you will find yourself paying FAA fines, and going I didn't know that?

The new bill authorizes the FAA to deny a permit to fly model aircraft without cause. So, if you do end up in court for some reason unknown to you, and you do win. Don't expect to get your permit renewed.

And don't forget about the FAA's "Commercial" angle. Do a flying demo at your local club or be at the wrong end of a buddy box, and your now a "Commercial Pilot".

This is about the FAA attempting to get their claws into the model aircraft industry and it's members. STAND up for your rights. Write the AMA. Get them to do what's right and not whats good for them.

Has anyone had time to read the fine print on the new reauthorization act as it pertains to the house and senate versions and any differences between the two? Beating a drum about the 2012 act and 336 will be a moot point if the new law passes. There is ominous stuff in that new law.

Is their bipartisan support for the new law?

Yeah but I thought I had read that there was a house version brewing as well. Gotta be something there too at some point to make it a law.

Apparently the privatization of ATC is included in there (at least it was in the House version). Several aviation types are upset with the wording (R/Cs, GA, etc.).E820, Raptor G4N, X50F/E, E620, Forza 450, and some planks.

If the AMA leadership had any sense, they would have already invited Trump to AMA events.....and there are plenty of famous AMA clubs in NY.

Trump would understand that the votes of the AMA's 160,000+ membership could help him.....while his influence, in return, could help us all....

"The Art of the Deal".

Instead the AMA chooses to argue with unelected FAA bureaucrats....led by Huerta, a partisan political hack...which has led to this predicament.

Shameful.

That's an interesting read - I can't discern what the finer points will translate into but there is some nice looking language about the positive benefits of UAS under 4.4 lb's - and some strange language about being able to fly 2000' above bodies of water at sea level (??)

There is also concerning references to as-yet undefined need for manufactures to adhere to some sort of designed safety standards and potential need for us to have an 'annual' done to show compliance with these standard (?) - I could be reading it wrong. Looks like a lot of latitude for interpretation.

There is a House bill and a Senate bill. At some point the two go to reconciliation to work out the differences. Following that the final bill should be agreed upon, passed by both houses, then signed by the President, where it becomes law.-----

Raptorz - I wouldn't take this to the point of hanging up the hobby, I do hear you and know people even locally but as much as I (and a lot of us like minded folks) see this as yet another slight against our collective freedom and fed govt. overreach the reality is almost nobody cares what we do at our local flying field. 99% of any attention these bills will garner would be at that "DRONE" hovering over a neighborhood or if you are dumb enough to hover one anywhere near an active airport.

Fly at sanction AMA field and I'll bet nothing changes except now we should have our AMA and FAA number on the aircraft.

It's good to hope for, but for many there is either no club field within sensible driving distance or the clubs that are either don't allow helis or do like one club in my area and impose restrictions so burdensome and biased that people don't even bother to try to participate. Personally, government overeach will become problematic when they tell me I can't fly my models within the boundries of my own property, even at 400ft or lower, when said property has no operating full scale air fields by any definition for well over 5 miles; I actually have no circles overlying my parcel.

The more of this that we see the harder it will be for the AMA to protect us. The Aerial Appliance operators have no sense.
