FAA Temporarily Suspends Online Small UAS Registration During Overnight Hours for Site Maintenance
http://www.faa.gov/news/updates/?ne...Aoc&cid=101_N_U
The agency has seen strong initial demand, with more than 45,000 registrations completed by the close of business on Tuesday. While an overwhelming number of people have successfully registered, a small number of users reported performance issues. The FAA instructed its contractor, CSRA, to address these issues and to complete other maintenance in advance of the post-holiday demand.

Yea . . . standard practice for companies pushing a product to market before it's ready and fixing their problems after the fact.

In my book it's called skimping on the development time

. . . software updates . . . replacing old bugs with new bugs . . .

45k registrations is saying that the site is working fairly well.

The contractor seems to have performed rather well under a short performance period. Cudos to them. Don't blame the programmers, they are only doing what they are hired to do.

I call BS on the 45,000 number.... thats like half of the AMA active member count. And with AMA saying to hold off I dont believe they had that many.... my guess would be closer to 450 total.

45,000 is just too high a number considering how many people actually know about this in the RC community and actually care AND are even associated with the AMA and given the time allowed.

Major BS....when this subject came up....given the 150000+ AMA members....fewer than 30000 responded.

Do you really think that people would so willingly "ante up"....when they are restricted from flying in any kind of AMA sanctioned contest, flyin, etc.....because they can't join the AMA?

Get real...lol

Merry Christmas all

I for one kinda of believe the numbers. Its been publicized in the news and is listed at all my local retailers who sell quads. I have been asked by several people at work about it who had bought quads for there kids for Christmas. I know three who haven't signed up for AMA who have registered on the FAA site.

I think I know where that number (45,000) is coming from... I bet its a website hit number which is a counter that keeps track of how many times the website has been visited... and not a value of people in the open database.

Yea...I can attest to that. I had a co-worker that asked me about the "drone" registration as he bought a quadcopter for his kid for Christmas (a non AMA member). So I sent him the link to read about and sign up.

And I was hearing some of the LHS are having people sign up when purchasing any type of "drone" / quadcopter. I'm not sure if that is including other aircraft. So that number could be somewhat accurate...or padded.

Having registered myself, there are two confirmation methods. First you supply an e-mail address and respond to a confirmation e-mail before proceeding.

After giving Name, Address, Phone (optional) you must supply a credit card # to which a $5 charge is made and later refunded. So I would say, that the count is not website hits. It is likely a real number. Even one of my computer phobe friends was able to negotiate the process.

There are supposedly 180 thousand AMA members and 1.6 million "Drones" have been sold in the last 2 years, so it is not impossible to have that kind of response to a "FREE" offering. Not sure that the AMA "hold off" message got out to all the AMA members.

I don't know if 1.6 million "Drones" includes other type of aircraft such as helicopters and planes. We also don't know how many drones each individual purchased. So the percentages are rather vague at the moment. And for the moment the only data we have is the government provided # of 45K.
