Did i just make a huge mistake?
Hi guys,

So a good few years back when i used to fly helis (around 1998) models like the X-cell pro 2 and the Robbe Futuras were like dream models for me that i could never afford and i just flew my little Shuttle zxx

Well it's 2015 and i just bought a super clean Robbe Millennium 60 off Ebay, did i just make a huge mistake?

I'm not sure what version it is cause didn't they do a 2 and a 3? it hasn't arrived yet so i only have the photos to go by. But it's got the white canopy on with the purple, red, orange and yellow stripes on the side and the decal just says 'Millennium 60' so i'm guessing it's the first version?. Frame doesn't look carbon.

Searching around the web i found a few online store with a few spares in stock but it seem like they are becoming thin on the ground so i'll have to fly it carefully it seems. Here in the UK Midland helicopters don't seem to have much, i found a site in Europe with s few spares and one in the USA.

It looks really clean in the photos, fully fitted out with the OS60 WC edition, Zimmerman pipe, Futuba 501 gyro. I remember how much this model and these components cost back when i was flying and crazy how much you can buy it for now days, i paid £180 for this model. Maybe i'm just a nostalgic fool as i still use a 35meg JR PCM9Xii tx for my DLG's (even though i also own a taranis and a DX6 black) but they don't make stuff now like they used to! haha.

I'll try add a couple of photos

Merry Christmas
Mark

As long as you're having fun thats what matters.

With helis do not see a rare nostalgic piece as much as other hobbies but maybe it is happening more lately.

Hopefully it's as clean as it looks in the photos when it arrives.

Gonna strip it and check it all over, says it's been sat, unflown for a long time so the OS may need a good service, or even just replaced?

Good thing is, the websites i found still held a good stock of the bearings for it so at least i can get those to fit some fresh ones.

It's a version 1 with the brown frames. If you want to go to carbon you could try Ramster on here as he may still have some custom carbon which are way better than the original.

Also very easy to convert to FBL if you want to go down that path.

Thanks mate!

Are they easy to convert to fbl using modern head parts from current models?

I did a quick Google this morning but never came up with anything. If i could convert to fbl using modern parts then that would be a bonus if i had to replace any head parts at any point.

I have a couple with the RJX head which is good because it's 10mm and I have one with an Align head which I had to shim as its 12mm. I'm just about to use a standard Robbe head as well which I bought a longer Vario 10mm shaft so it goes up in the headblock further and I will put a second bolt through where the seesaw bearing retainer screws came out of.

For ease and convenience the RJX is the easier of the lot.

I'm gonna be scared to fly it for fear of crashing it and not getting spares! haha

And whoa! so much changed, hardly any nitro helis here in the UK anymore, only basically 1 brand of fuel carried by all the stores.

I remember the good days with so many awesome nitro helis to choose from, seeing the first HH gyro come out in the CSM ICG360 etc etc.

Prices are way down these days though, i remember my Shuttle ZXX kit being £329.99, you can almost get a 600/50 sized for that now and they are carbon/metal too and not all plastic.

Although compared to my Blade 450 i have, i already know how amazingly stable this Milli is gonna be compared to the the little Blade =)

As you said, a lot has changed since 98', and with the current date electronics like 2.4Ghz radios, HV brushless servos (with no need for regulation) etc etc, the likelyhood of electronic failures are very slim, and as we know the Robbes of that time are solid mechanical machines that when build and maintained correctly are very reliable..

Let us know how it all goes! Enjoy.

Got the Milli today, what a beast!

I never did progress onto anything bigger than a 30 sized when i flew the nitro helis so have no experience of them, but it's a heavy thing!

Gonna strip it, replace any bearings, and give the engine a service as it's apparently been sat for a few years unused, get some fresh main and tail blades for it and check the servos and fit my own radio gear.

But it's in good condition for it's age, just a shame you cant get spares easily.

Merry Christmas!

Hi mate,

No, while everything looks clean and tight, i would imagine it needs a complete strip and rebuild to check every bearing, and also to have the engine out to check that too, time i just don't have currently.

Also it has two Futaba 9202 and one 9205 servos on cyclic. Now i know this is a model from a few years back but specs on these servos show only 5kg of torque, that's very low for a 60 sized model right? did we really use these servos in models of this size and weight? i feel a set of new cyclic servos would be needed, heck even Hobbyking Rotostar servos are putting out 10kg these days.

So for now it's sat unused and i'm not sure what i'm gonna do with it really, plus with spares hard to come by.

Awesome, i know where to come if i need anything

The yellow ones looked the best, since mine is the first version it has the white canopy, but since it's more of a off white colour now, i may spray it yellow and cut some fresh decals of the blue/red/orange flashes.

I may get it going, it will take a while as i don't have that much free time to mess about with it, but will make a nice little project to hopefully get it ready to fly again by summer.

Since it's obviously not been flown in a long time, i think i need to pull the engine for a service, but i may just put something new in there like a Webra P75 as i'm not confident stripping the engine down for fresh bearings etc.

Skyline still shows a carbon frameset on their website: http://www.skylinemodels.co.uk/Carb...m-Frameset.html

Quick UK may have some cnc Milli upgrade parts they'd more than likely be happy to let go of.

Changing to harder damper o-rings will help a lot to get quicker cyclic response. You can use Vario O-ring 3 x 7 mm hard (I think they're 90 duro)

Hi Trillian, good to see you over here too (sparky from RCHA)

I'm still not sure what i'm doing with the Milli, currently i have it on Ebay as i fly my dlg gliders pretty much all the time, but i think due the spares shortage it won't sell.

If it doesn't then it looks like i'm keeping it. May ask around for a few spares like main shafts and gears. I guess there's no point in swapping the OS61-wc out for a 90 due to the type of flying i do so it can all stay like it is.

Hey Mark,

Yeah it's hard to say with Ebay on something like that, it's all in the timing if someone else is looking.

Things like the main shaft are nothing special really. The main drive gear I'm not sure about availability or possible alternatives but as it's a mod 1.0 straight cut gear there may be alternatives. The potentially scarce one is the crown gear that drives the tail which is shared with the Futura and it's pretty sturdy. All the parts will last a long time if you don't crash.

If you get it flying you'll find it's very precise and well behaved. I learned a lot with the Futura as it instilled confidence (and the Milli flies pretty much the same as they both share the system 88 control setup and same rotorhead etc.)
