BEC or not???
Quick question, I have a 550L Dominator with 850kv motor, Outrage 9180 cyclics and align bl855hv on the tail, with Edge 130 esc. Would it be safe to run 6 to 8 volts on the internal bec safely. I'm a sport flyer, no hard 3d at all. What are you all's thoughts???

BEC
With the power hungry equipment we use today, I would put a pro bec onboard... just to be safe..

I have always been a proponent of straight 2s lipo power for HV servos, but due to some other factors last year I discovered that some servos can repeatedly shut down some FBL units, not because of high power draw, but because of back EMF voltage spikes.

I found that a WR Hercules BEC isolated the EMF spikes, and effectively resolved the issue. The 9180 servos that you referenced did not cause the issue of back EMF, but they are strong, fast servos, and as such, I would be leery of operating them off the BEC that comes with the ESC. If it were my heli, (and I do fly a 6s 600 with a 2s RX pack) I'd go with a 2s lipo for your servos and eliminate the BEC altogether.

I know you will see differing opinions on this subject, but this is what has worked well for me for the last 5 years.

Good luck.

EMF voltage spikes.
Can you explain why a brushless servo....which uses a "mini EsC" to commutate the servo motor...which uses snub diodes....is susceptible to these effects?

With a low "qual" servos whose ESC FETS don't use back EMF "snub diodes"..... is indicative of a "low rent servo".

This is not rocket science.

I have no problem with running a 2s lipo direct.. did not realize your servos were HV rated...
I am using a 2s 3k in my latest project, and all is good!!
No idea what an EMF spike is, but I guess my setup doesn't have them

I've decided to put a cc bec pro running it at 8v to get the optimum use from the servos. ThanksMinicopter Diabolo 800, Minicopter Triabolo 700, Minicopter Diabolo 700, Minicopter Diabolo 600, Minicopter Diabolo 550, Goblin 770

Pro BEC
That set up will work just fine!!!
Just a note, you will need a 3s pack to hold 8 volts..

OKay, I never thought of running a 3s lipo for that. I have some 1800 and what not,so we will see. Thanks..to all.Minicopter Diabolo 800, Minicopter Triabolo 700, Minicopter Diabolo 700, Minicopter Diabolo 600, Minicopter Diabolo 550, Goblin 770

One last thing. Since you are running a 6s main pack, I see no problem with connecting a Pro BEC into the main connector. As I read from your post, you are adding both an aux flight pack (3S) and the BEC.

IMHO, you are just adding unnecessary weight to your bird. With your servos, you can simply run the 2s pack for your servos and RX, or simply tie the BEC to the output of the main 6s pack. If you are running a 12s setup, the BEC only ties into one of the 6s packs, even though Castle says it is 12s capable.

I'm tossing back and fourth ideas because my esc is wired with a connection for a bec already, so I might as well just use my bec pro to save on weight.
