I continue to use them if they return to normal after they cool, but if the cells are still ballooned up after cooling down, they make me nervous and I cut the connector and give then a salt bath.

I've had cells swell up that had a lower IR than other cells..

If the IR's are good I'd use them. But, in my least favorite models.

For me depends on how tight the wrapping is. If it's still soft when you press your finger on it I still use them. If it's drum tight time for them to go.

I kind of see what you're saying, but have you seen how much expansion it takes for that wrapper to fail? The videos of lipos failing show they are usually 2-3 times the size of original when they let go. The wrapper feeling hard may not be that big a deal.

But at the same time, I see what you are getting at. Just how "puffed" is it? That has to be a consideration. For me, it depends on the size of puff. If it only grew by a few mm, I would likely fly it. If the thing looks plump I would not. And then there are varying degrees in between where it depends on what they are in. I give 2 or 3 cells in a small model a lot more leeway than, say a 10-12s setup. So the impact of one letting go goes into my feelgood/feelbad assessment. I may let my little Trex 450 fly with a puffy battery but my Logo 600 will not.

I check the pack balance immediately after a flight. I've had packs that are seriously out of balance but then charge and balance OK. If the pack continues to get out of balance and looses capacity, I take them out of service. As an example, if I land after a 4 minute flight and two cells are at 35% and one is at 14%, I balance charge at 1C and then check the capacity. If the calculated capacity is appreciably lower, i.e., 98% and now 92%, I take the pack out of service. I slow discharge the pack with a 100 ohm 25 watt power resistor. I'll dispose of the pack when it gets to 0 volts.Gerry Cullan,

+1 on the slow discharge with a resistor, more effective than a salt solution. On the salt water bath, corrosion would occur before pack goes to a safe level

T,
I suggest using that puffed pack for test hovers or bench test for your builds if you can't bare to put the pack out of service.

FYI
I use my bad packs to power my music, iPad, charge my RX packs and cell phone at the field. LOL

I also use them for my field starter!

This is what I use to charge my phones and ipads

BTW
When you use a lipo for your starter on a bigger motors that requires globs of torque and if you flood the motor and lock up the starter. Will not be a good thing for the lipo. For this reason, I use the old school nicad.
