Miniature Aircraft 1005 Gasser Graphite Side Frames
Hello All,

Seems strange to post a Min Air post in Antiques or Out of Business but I am in need of the exhaust side graphite outside frame for a 1005 gasser. One of those great eBay deals that upon close examination not so great.

Checked Ron Lund's site and they are sold out.

Thanks, Bill

Gasser frames
I used the frames for a pattern and made them out of aluminum.

Gasser frames
Yes. I thought about making them out of graphite sheets but it is tricky to cut without the right tooling. Aluminum is a thought.

Gasser
I made mine out of aluminum six years ago and have held up so far.But I'm a old school heli flyer throttle stick in the center for hover and gyro in rate mode all the time.I got mine in 1996 it has a lot of flying time on it.Went from glow to gas and never turned back.

McMaster has black G10 which is much easier to work with. Looks original.

A trick i have used in the past to cut out alum frames is to use a good side frame as a guide so to speak. Drill all holes first using the good frame as a guide. Trace the frame and rough cut it out with band saw, jig saw, etc. Now bolt the side frame you are using as a pattern to the one you are making, but use nuts or washers to space them roughly 3 mm apart. Now get a 1/8 or 3mm carbide cutting burr and put it in your drill press (high speed). Adjust the height so that the cutters of the burr will cut the side frame that you are making, but the smooth upper portion of the burr will hit the side frame u r using as a pattern. Slowly and carefully work away at cutting the excessive material until the cutter contacts the pattern side frame and stops cutting. Works really well, but you have to be careful how agressive you get as it may rip it right out of ur hands.

Side Frames
Thanks for all the tips. I actually managed to find a used side frame on eBay after posting this. I lucked out. The drill press and the router bit is a great idea as cutting with a jig saw alone will definitely leave an unprofessional result. Thanks for the responses.
