Guys,
Just recently purchased a Trex 600l Dominator...keeps stripping the Front Tail Drive Gears (Beveled Gears)! Stripped the first set on the second flight (note was taking off grass. Thought that might be the reason...However replaced this past weekend and only got halfway through the first flight (took off pavement)!

I only have 2.5 flights on this thing...can't find the reason...Please advise.

Tail bearings are smooth, torque tube is smooth and upon assembly of this 3rd set of gears everything feels smooth!

So frustrated...almost afraid to fly it at this point. Been lucky to hear it make a funny noise when they strip and able to land. Been in idle up only twice and not flying it hard at all!

Greatly appreciate any advice and suggestions...

Thanks,
Terry

If you even touch the tail blades on anything and the crown gears will let go. Make sure the mesh of the gears is good. If the gear is pushed in to far and there is slop in the gears it could cause it to let go. Most every time I hit the tail blades on the grass to cause them to let go.

Would Tail Gain have anything to do with gear failure?
I am using the Ikon Set at 45 in the program and 70 on Transmitter gain on Gear Switch. Tail does not wag in normal or Idle-up One. Could these Gain settings be too high?

Anyone use or recommend the 2mm or 2.5mm Shim to tighten mesh?

if your TT gears are black, than they would be able to within the grass ... even a 2x4!! Align did a youtube video with a 7oo bolted down featuring black TT gears. they used the CF tail blade to cut a piece of wood. if it's true ... than grass should not an issue, pavement and hard ground .. maybe.

Watch at YouTube

I would check the follow:
- front drive gear upper and lower bearing (the vertical gear)
- TT & umbrella bearings (when bearings fail, they create resistance)
- maybe a chipped tooth on auto gear/fr drive/umbrella gears/rear shaft
- check your main & one way bearings for play
- lastly if you are running any type of GOV, run a simple v-curve for the moment to make sure the GOV is not too aggressive.

I used to fly the BL750MX in my 600E DFC

Other than crashes, the only time I ever chipped a tooth was when I replaced the black with the white gears.

I could strip a white gear simply by lifting off and doing a hard stop after three or four turns on a piro.
Boom - instant nasty noise

I fly the Scorpion HKIII-4035-530 now. I burned out the BL750MX.
But, I still don't strip the black gears.

What FBL are you using?
If it is a Brain / iKON, turn up the D gain - that will stop the bounce.

I'm curious how close the 600L drive train is to the previous generations with a belt drive. I ran a belt as loose as I could without being able to make it slip by hand, it still auto'd well, sure there was some belt slap, but you could dig a hole in the field with the tail blades without hurting anything. Seems silly to have issues just taking off from grass.

This Heli is brand new...only 2.5 Flights...no hard landings, last flight was off asphalt...tail never touched.

Here is my set-up in the Castle Controller:

Settings for Gov Mode:
GOV Set RPM
Initial Spool-Up rate (5)
Head Speed Change Rate (5)
Gov Gain (Medium)
Throttle Curves:
N 30 1850 head speed
1 70 2150 Head speed
3 100 2350 Head speed....have not even flown with this head speed yet.

I have looked over:
Front drive gear upper and lower bearing (the vertical gear) no play and run smooth.
TT & umbrella bearings run smooth.
Can't find any chipped teeth on auto gear/fr drive/umbrella gears/rear shaft
Can't find any play in main & one way bearings.

IC .. I suggest setting up the ESC:

- fix point
- run v curves
- make sure the transitions from N-ID1-ID2 is close so it doesn't change headspeed aburptly
- if unsure on v-curve, PM me

If you are using an iKON FBL, use the iKON's gov instead of V-curves

The FBL gyro's gov is going to give you better advisability and performance.

I appreciate all your inputs/suggestions...Big Thanks to jimjag!

I need to order the plug to link the white CC wire to the Ikon.
Pending weather this Sat, I plan to run the CC Gov with the Gov Speed set to 12. Lube all gears with Silicone and hover 3 flights to get them broke-in and see how the tail holds!
Will use the Ikon Gov and fine tune set-up once I get the Link Wire.
I have 2 more sets of Gears on the way...The big problem is running out of decent flying weather...wish me Luck

Thanks,
Terry

If you tail gain is too high or the piro stops are set too harsh or you have programmed too much right rudder pitch (more than 40 degrees or so) and you do a lot of piro reversals at a high piro rate or simply piro more to the right than left, this can put a lot of stress on the tail gears.

I have never stripped a white torque tube gear yet and I only take off and land on grass and have been using the same gears for 3 years now. and I touch the ground frequently.
I don't understand why people are stripping out gears ? I set the gear mesh so there is 0 slop and let them break in.

Maybe I got the last set of good gears

I don't even do that and I have no problems with the old white gears! It's and Align kit, no adjustment necessary anyway!
