This one cell reads zero volts after briefly shorting this 6s battery. What could be wrong? How can it be fixed?

All that happened was a medium size spark at the connector and ruined the connector, but the battery did not puff, did not get hot, and did not catch fire (obviously). I removed the wrapping and tape from the pack for inspection and attempted repair expecting to see a joint de-soldered but I cannot visibly see any compromised solder joints; it all appears to be fine to me. (However I have never attempted such a repair on a battery, so I don't know what I don't know, and I'm fully aware of the danger. But all I am doing so far is testing with a volt meter.)

Many more detailed photos from different angles here:

Try reading again but put neg side from meter on neg tab the read each tab along the run 3/6/9 ... Do u see v at the 5 th tab ? Do u see v at the 6 and final tab ? If not u prob burnt the electrode inside the pack. Sum times when shorting it can act as a fuseable link to protect cell from firing off ?? What make n model was it ??

Sum tabs are welded togather some are soldered if 6 is dead u could carefully cut cell off n use as 5s

The cell just died ... It's not a cold solder or loose connector.

If you are comfortable withopening and soldering lips packs, your only options are:
- replace that cell if you have donor cells
- if not have A donor cell, this pack can become a donor
- turn it into a 5S pack

Thanks.

@JEEPWORLD2002/2, it is a Spyder 6s 5300mAh. Yes, I've touch each set of terminal of each cell and they read ~3.8v (after a flight). That sounds like a good hypothesis. I've emailed ProgressiveRC tech support to seek expert advice too, but I have regard for others' insight here too.

@helifanatix, Perhaps you're correct. I'm in denial at this point. If a new 1s 5300 cell is available, I might be so bold to replace this cell and reassemble.

Any more thoughts and observations?

The overall voltage out of the pack -- does it still look like a 6S pack? Full charged you should see about 25 volts. If so, you have somehow damaged the wiring between that cell and the balance port.

If one cell is toast, you should be reading about 21 volts fully charged. If not, you've got a bad cell. Time to replace the pack.

I seriously doubt you'll find a 5300 mah single cell, and even if you do, there is a good chance its discharge curve doesn't match the other 5 cells you already have in the pack.

@dkshema, Thanks. No, then 6s series leads reads 0v because this cell's discontinuity (seemingly). Yes, the other 5s series read ~19v (3.8v per cell).

I'm looking for a ray of hope!

just saw this, I once had a solder tab in a lipo come loose and would not read unless the tab was jiggled around. This would mean the internal connection has separated from the juice path. The solder tab is not soldered on but spot welded to the internal lipo lead. The lipo I had a problem with where the tab was loose could not be soldered to the internal materials as solder would not stick, I think the internal material is aluminum if not mistaken.

Because it is in the ground side it may be possible to drill through the spot weld area for a 2mm nut and bolt being extremely careful not to go into the lipolymer material very close by if the tab has come loose.

I suggest getting a dead cell and looking into what is behind the skin where the tab comes out before doing anything, this way you can get a clear idea of what is going on.

I'm with dk, time for a new pack.

Your ray of hope may start a fire in your home, car or heli causing much more grief.

It's possible the cell is shorted internally.

Thanks again, everyone. This is a learning experience. David Gray from ProgressiveRC.com concurs it is an internal short as well. I'm hugely grateful it didn't blow up. I know what to do to prevent shorting it again.

Nothing really you can do other than what we have suggested previously.

Sadly it's part of the hobby and if it's under warranty, you can send it in. Otherwise you gotta bite the bullet.

BTW
I got a bucket of packs, I get very very very sad when I look at it

Don't be "penny wise and pound foolish".

If your batts don't "measure up", trash 'em.

You have much more investment in your heli airframe, etc.

The cost of batts are the cost of "doing business".

When something like that happens to me or a cell just dies, I strip down the pack into other needed cell packs for other things...quad, RX packs, starter packs, fuel pump packs, bench packs, etc...
