Is there any way besides email or login in to runryder to receive notifications on your smart phones like you receive with other apps? Thanks

Right now it's just email. With RR's email PM notification system you can reply to the email instead of logging in.

You are the first person with such a request. Just for notifications or an entire RR browsing app?

RR's unique feature set is not compatible with Tapatalk.
or away from your phone
I do not understand the "away from phone" part. Besides Tapatalk, can you tell me the apps you are using for notifications in the context of forums?

Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you can already create some of this functionality client side.

Since I do a fair bit of buying/selling in the classifieds, I want to know about PMs instantly...especially while I'm at work and can't be checking personal email all day.

most email clients have the ability to filter email messages and perform actions as a result. when I get an RR PM email notification from the RR system, the message is always from @runryder.com, and always has some specific text at the top:

=PM=

So, I created a filter based on the sender's email and that string of text above. When those two criteria are met, my client sends me a text message.

So, how do I get text message from email? Well, most carriers will send a text based on your phone number plus a carrier-specific domain.

here's the most current list I have (I use verizon, so I know that one works. as for the rest YMMV)

Verizon: your10digitphonenumber@vtext.com
TMobile: your10digitphonenumber@tmomail.net
AT&T: your10digitphonenumber@txt.att.net
Sprint: your10digitphonenumber@page.nextel.com OR your10digitphonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com

I don't have an exhaustive list of which email clients work. But, I do have filters such as these set up in gmail, hotmail, my corporate exchange, and comcast.net accounts. So, it's a pretty common feature.

Hope that helps someone out.

if it ain't broke, break it.

Mark,
It seems like you can enhance the existing notifications functionality by adding an option to also receive a text message w/o needing to build a native app for RR (although a native app would be kinda cool). So the stop gap will be to allow users to register their cell phones and provide an option to receive notifications via SMS (with a standard text rates will apply msg - lol). There are two ways to pull this off:
1. As cudaboy mentioned, you can go the cheapy route and send the text message in the form of an email and the carrier will convert it to an SMS message and deliver on your behalf. The downside to this is users will have to register their carrier as part of the "opt-in" process. Also, I think only the "big" carriers support this so you may alienate some of the community.
2. Subscribe to an SMS service through a myriad of communications vendors. They provide messaging-as-a-service. The plus to this is all you need is a persons cell phone number...no need to register their carrier. the SMS gateway manages the routing to the appropriate carrier. Plus its supported by all carriers.

I do think getting timely notifications is a useful feature and would be welcomed by many. It is part of the user experience today and is one of the most used communications channels out there.

Cheers

Looking into the "SMS service" idea I see it as cost prohibitive on RR's side. Even if RR sent you a text message about a new PM you could not reply to the text message. Now with current RR email PM notifications you CAN reply without logging into RR. It works well. Just set up a Gmail account for internet notifications and take care of business.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gmail/id422689480?mt=8

Again, email reply to RR email PM notifications right from your email app.

I understand the part about being cost-prohibitive. Regarding your comment about being able to reply from a text is not 100% accurate. First, I'd say the value of receiving a text message in a timely manner is primarily for giving you the fastest notification as possible so you can then take an action. That action could be to log into RR and do something. You can enhance this and provide a link to your inbox or even directly to the PM. This would be very user-friendly way to:
1. Get a notification quickly
2. Receive it thru a channel (i.e. SMS) that is pervasive
3. Allow you to take an action quickly especially if you include a link the PM that triggered the text in the first place.

There are feely available APIs that you can shorten URL's to fit within the 160 limit. They are:
1. http://www.tiny url.com/
2. http://www.bitly.com/
3. http://goo.gl/

I just ran thru a series of tests as a proof of concept and I was able to click a link from a text message and it took me straight to a PM and a thread.

This may have some legs after all

I hope this helps,
Cheers!

What's the problem with receiving an email? Personally I would prefer an email over text. Again, you can you reply to it if applicable.

Yes but if you have your emails set up as a notification then every email will notify you and drive your phone crazy. The point here is to singlely notify you when you have a pm from runryder. Just a thought and I was curious. Thanks

I addressed this in my post. Include a filter for the string "=PM=" (without the quotes) in your filter, then only PMs will be forwarded to text.

The filtering system available in most email clients is very robust.

There is really no practical way to do that.

If you want a server to reach out and touch you, it has to know your IP . . . and that won't happen for a mobile.

So . . . the mobile has to check in periodically to see if there's anything to see and act accordingly. Like checking email.

If you'r really that obsessed to stay that close in touch with a non-life-critical activity, I would suggest a therapist.

If you want a server to reach out and touch you via SMS, it only has to know your phone number, not your IP.

Regardless, this is easily done client side. If anyone is having trouble setting this up, I'll gladly walk you through the steps. This is not speculation. I have it set up and working currently for the exact scenario you are asking for.

Yes, it would be ideal if RR could offer this functionality. But, there's a huge additional cost for Mark to tie in to an SMS capable system. And, for what? A few users at best? As far as I can tell OP is only after the ability to get notified of PMs. This is trivial for an end user to set up, costs nothing, and works.

if it ain't broke, break it.
