Somewhat similar in my journey in Shotokan. I started as a means toward a higher level of physical fitness, but discovered that I was actually on a journey of learning and discovery. I also got involved with full contact competition. Unfortunately, while training for my Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) and sparring for an upcoming bout, I ended up with a closed head brain injury that damn near killed me. But I beat the odds and here I am! I do miss the Shotokan training, but all it would take is one more bad hit at the rear base of my skull to end my time walking this earth. That same injury also took me out of the air, as I can no longer pass a FAA flight physical.

Years (many!) ago when I flew primarily fixed wing, I did compete in AMA events for pattern and scale.

While helis are a great personal enjoyment, due to my age, reflexes, and eyesight, I'm getting more and more involved in scale. Currently, about a 3rd of my fleet are scale helis.

In my retirement, I work part time at a local hobby shop. Primarily doing repairs and setups, the position offers an opportunity to test fly a wide variety of new and repaired helis and quads. The original poster is a "regular" and it is always a pleasure to have him in the store.

IC .. glad you pulled through and are among the living. Your situation is inherit with the Martial Arts Arena and have witness many occurrences to ask myself how far we want to get into it. Sadly as people, we live in both extremes and seldom take the time to fully analyze the situation. I live vicariously through others and decided to take it easy in any endeavor. I wasn't willing to assume the potential risk.

I'm currently pursuing a different career and got involved with risk assessment. It's amazing how it relates to everyday life and so much of what we see around. Gave me a new prospective of the RC Heli. It doesn't agree and there is truth to that age old say,
"what we love never makes sense" (actually cost us thousand of $$$ ..LOL)

I used to help the local hobby shop but sadly RC Helicopters are becoming like endangered species around here. Assurance is 20 minutes away and from looks of what I can see, not good. All the hobby shop hardly stock any heli parts anymore, I actually have more heli stuff than they do. We have:
- RC Depot (they stock Kontroniks a far as 3 yrs back when I became an everyday customer)
- Ultimate Hobbies
- Hobby Shack (now Hobby People)
- Airtronics
- Gyro
- Rob's Hobby
- Wow Hobbies

... some shops been around since early 80's.

Hopefully the east coast has more RC Heli patronage. I've been in the hobby since 91' and 39 yrs old. Always a single rotor man and don't see an end to this dream.

Wow it's been 21 months since I got these Blades flying and they are still flying good. These are my go to heli's and my Son has two 600's one on six cells and they are his go to's also.
They will go away some day but they were defintly a good investment.
I have 15 other heli's but when I jump in the truck it seams like one of the Blades is in the back. LOL
