AZ my man....I think that you had better more your tight little butt along. Anyone who can't figure out why a guy would put a "boat load of money in a scale model" is out in left field. This is a hobby you twit, and if a guy gets his kicks out of building a scale ship that is his business and his pleasure in his spare time.
Your making a lot of enemies in a short amount of time.

Let's see him with a nitro or gasser powered multi rotar. I won't even mention a turbine.
like this! - takes skills to fly one like this (or any CP or reversing motor "3D" MR)

Then let's see one. A nice, simple straight in auto with a decent flare, cushion and touchdown with zero damage.

How low was the police helo flying? Article doesn't say. They often fly at 200ft AGL or less when in "hot pursuit", which is WELL below the established AMA 400ft rule. It if was that low or even lower and flew into an area already occupied by a "drone" being flown responsibly then tough sh^t. It's on the police helo. There's no way the R/C operator on the ground would have seen or even heard the helo until it was right on top of him. It ain't always automatically the modeler's fault...

I doubt police helos operate below 500'

That is VERY low when over populated areas. Not to mention what they'd prefer to operate at to remain in the autorotation envelope.

Not sure what if any advantage would be gained flying lower. Even for pursuit.

They do absolutely operate below 500ft AGL. Also, if the helo was a 206, which is the most common police helo of them all, anything over about 55KIAS at 100ft AGL is outside of the deadman's curve on the height-velocity diagram. They can auto just fine at 100KIAS/100ft AGL. I used to fly/instruct in TH-57B/Cs, aka Bell Jet Ranger 206.

I really don't see the need to operate that low. All a helo can do is keep a light on the suspect while ground based assets make the arrest. What possible advantage is there to operating so low? You operate that low, every light pole and tall tree becomes an obstacle and a danger to the crew as well as citizens on the ground. And maneuvering becomes uber critical. I seriously doubt there's any advantage other than adrenaline rush to operating that low. Not impressed and hope this isn't true.
