Chinook
My stepson just got out of the Army last summer after 13 years as a Chinook mechanic. I helped him learn to fly helis and now he wants a Chinook. Is Vario the only company that still sells them? Does anyone have a used one they would be willing to sell? Thanks for your help, Dave

Yes, I have a small chinook, it uses 450 size parts and blades. You can see it fly in my gallery. I have an extra body unpainted so your son could paint it up like his.
Let me know if interested and I will put together more info and pricing.

RC CH-47 Chinook.
Hi guys!

Thanks for all the info. I have decided that I am going to buy the Ch-47 from GyroFreak. We are actually meeting up in a couple of hours. Pretty stoked about it. ! Im am going to use her as a trainer to get comfortable with flying tandem rotor aircraft. Then going to get the Vario Chinook!! I contacted Joe at East Coast Scale Helicopters yesterday and he was able to answer all of my questions. The model kit is based out of Germany (which is pretty cool because I was stationed there. My Chinook unit was called Big Windy. Anyways that's where the kit will be coming from directly they don't keep a inventory of them here in the states. So Joe sent a email to Vario in Germany just waiting on the response. Then for my final decision. Which its looking like a green light go!! I will keep ya'll informed on the process and build. Keep em' flying boys!

47Chief, I was in Big Windy in the mid 80's when they were in Dolan Barracks, Schwaebisch Hall. I then PCS'd to Bragg where I spent the next 4 Years.

I too hope to one day have my own Chinook Model, though I haven't decided if it will be a C Model (006 was my tail number in Germany) or a D Model (333 at Ft. Bragg)...

Good luck with yours, keep us posted with Pics and how she flies!

If you can fly any "sport"or larger RC helicopter, then you will be able to fly the Vario CH47 Chinook, assuming you build and equip it with the recommended components (heads, blades, 3SX fbl system, etc.).

It is one of the easiest to fly helicopters that I have ever owned, and certainly, by far, the easiest tandem helicopter I have ever flown (and I have flown many).

RC Chinook
Chris that is awesome! I Was at Bragg as a Infantryman then re-classed to become a Chinook Mechanic. After training in Ft. Eustis I went to Giebelstadt AAF that is where F-Co. 5-159 Avn "Big windy" was located then after a tour in Afghanistan the unit was flagged and relocated to Katterbach AAF. And Big Windys new unit name was B Co. 5-158 Avn Big windy. I only got to work on the D models but just a few months ago they Received the new F models from Boeing. Veterans dayis tomorrow so I want to wish you a happy Veterans Day. From one old hooker to another!! And will defiantly keep posting pics and the build process. Sandy, Thanks for sharing the info and the video was awesome! She looked like the real thing up there in the air. Im sure I will be coming to you for questions once I get mine. And cant wait to see your detailed!

Congradulations Will...enjoy you journey to the Vario Chinook. I hope to get one someday. If the Vario kit was a gasser, my order would have been in a long time ago.

rcheli808,

The Vario uses a 240kv motor on 12S which = about 10,560 pulley rpm. What is stopping you from making a motor mount and using a "gasser" engine?

My flights average 1220 watts (1.6 HP), and I typically max. at 1700 watts (2.3 HP).

Maybe if you have the Gasser motor facing to the rear (my motor is facing front), the pull starter could come out the battery access door.

You would need to figure out proper cooling, exhaust and fuel tank position.

But hey, that's what scale modeling is all about.

Sandy

Or, you just stay with the ease of "plug and Play" electric.....

Sandy, I must have been at lunch when you and Butch shot that video!! Absolutely beautiful.. that's the first time I have seen a tandem fly like that since 2009.. you were cranking and banking like a wild man!!
Vario has come up with a complete winner with this one...
To you new guy's that are .just getting into these machines, your beginning a truly amazing journey, and following Sandy's lead will will make things a lot easier..
I am going to keep an eye on this thread.. have fun!!

Thanks for the suggestions Sandy...maybe someday I will start with the electric version and then think about a conversion to gas. I really enjoyed your video. Looks like she is dialed in nicely. Brought back some flying memories...ahh someday.
